Just musing on this wet and windy evening…. I’ve always had a soft spot for Exmoors having ridden a cracking one in my childhood.

I would love to own one but worry I would be too big. I’m quite tall too. The full up 13.2 ones though are quite sticky and solid 🤔 the one I used to ride was 13 hands on a good day…

Exmoors are preferred max height of 12.2 for mares and 12.3 for stallions and geldings.
Average height balances out at approx 12 to 12.1.
A 13.2 pure bred would be pretty hard to source as most breeders try to stay true to type and breed description.
A 12.2 well made up adult pony will ride much bigger, tho with a short neck.
Good luck if searching for an over height one 🙂

Ok how much would a 12.3hh carry and how tall without looking silly?

The herd 23 ponies tend to be on the bigger side, with lots going over 13hh. I'm 5'3 and have a 12.2hh and 12.3hh. They are real characters and can be tricky, but they make me smile everyday. There are people of 5'6 riding them and they don't look ridiculous because they take up so much leg.

I have an Exmoor on loan who is from herd 23 and he's 13.3hh. He's a very chunky chap! I'm 5'4 and I think he's the perfect size for me. He is indeed a real character and very clever. Love him!
