Expected costs of a part-share?

Hi PTL,

I would chat to the owner of the more suitable horse and see if you could come to an agreement - written up into a contract.

I'm wondering if anyone thinks the abilities of the horse should be taken into consideration? i know the less-able/quirkier horses still cost us the same amount but if i were to advertise my little mare for share i would advertiser her cheaper than my all-rounder - is this the 'done thing' or am i over thinking now?

I charged less than the going rate for the area for a green horse. He was very safe, but just not able to get out competing etc. straight away so I took that into account.

No I agree it depends somewhat on supply and demand. There is less demand for a quirky horse and you have to take into account what your sharer brings to the table, like schooling ability. But you also have to remember most people share because they can't afford to full cost or because they have limited time or both and many it's their next step after riding school or after a break from horses. So charge too much and you can price yourself out of the market.

When I was looking for my first share I had a set of tick boxes that were non-negotiable, and to be honest the money wasn't that important (within reason!). I would always have gone for the more suitable horse over the cheaper one.

My share is safe, sane, educated, on full livery and owned by a grown up. These were all on my "must haves" so I was happy to pay for him.

However, he's also old and a bit unfit, and hates schooling (bless him!). I've had some amazing milestones on him but now think that my money might be better spent elsewhere. I've got a new set of tick boxes which again, if it's the right horse and the right circumstances, I would be happy to pay for.

After all this, I heard from the YO today that the owner is having second thoughts about loaning her horse so all of this might be completely irrelevant. However have got some good info for entering into future shares, whenever that will be!

me too!! I'd even pay for their fuel to get to the yard

Big sigh... I can't find a sharer even though I'm not charging anything! All they might have to do is bring the horse in from field, groom him and maybe skip out. Also remove poo from the school if they've used the school and the horse has pooed. In exchange they get a nice properly surfaced well draining school to themselves, a lovely nicely schooled horse with manners to die for, a visiting instructor and the chance to compete.

On the rare occasions I've found someone they've been unreliable - normally I get a last minute 'can't be bothered' excuse or they simply don't turn up. Hard when you've made an alternative arrangement and suddenly have to rush back to deal with the horse.

The last time I shared - I paid £145 a month by standing order and I always turned up, regardless of the mileage, traffic or weather, even if I couldn't ride. The only time I had a problem was when I turned up on one of my nights and as I was emptying the wheelbarrow my back went into a really painful spasm. So I had to phone the owner and ask for him to take over.

*sigh* why do I never see anything like this near me? Would kill for some horse time again after selling up to go to uni but as a student paying for regular shares just isn’t a viable option

Where do the owners of share horses typically advertise? I’m seriously horse hunting but would seriously consider a share arrangement with the right owner/horse combo. But I can honestly say in approaching 4 months of reading what feels like every bloomin’ advert out there, I’ve seen very few (none?) shares advertised. A few for full loan but no shares. Where should I be looking??

When I was looking I was checking preloved and local facebook groups mostly, and quite a few came up just none that were right for me at the time. The way I found mine was to approach a Yard Owner I liked the look of via Facebook and asked if any of their liveries were looking for a sharer. It just so happened that the timing was right and it took off from there. You could also try posting an ad of your own in local Facebook groups, I see that quite often and they always seem to get a good response.
