I've been bringing my friesian back into work over the last month (he had a bad kick to the hock - he's all fine now) and have avoided cantering on hacks so far. He gets lively in the sch and throws some bucks in. When we've hacked out and pointed his nose homeward he's pratted about and jumped around a fair bit.
Now decided to take him on the local grassy tracks with a friend tomorrow - I know he will be v excited - shall I just hang on to a lump of mane and go for it or would you do it differently?

Hehe you're braver than I am! Congratulations with getting him back into work again though - bet it must feel fantastic to be out and about again.

Can you lunge him beforehand to take the edge off? I would try to keep it quite calm for a while as he's probably still full of beans from being off. However he's more likely to buck if you attempt to hold him back so if you feel ok about it and the ground conditions are suitable, go for it and have a bit of fun - i'm sure he'd like to ....whatever the horsey version of letting your hair down is!

Just be careful and stay safe. Don't do anything that might put either of you in danger :-)

Slip a few fingers in a neck strap, lock your leg down and send him forwards. Try not to get into a situation where you're having your first canter and you're holding him back, try to let him get him working forwards until he's got a bit of his freshness out.

Lunge if you can though.

Duh - forgot out body protector I might dig it out! I've lunged this week twice and he was stonking around - not pulling on the lunge just whizzing around. I think we'll have quite a long trot before we get to the tracks so hope that takes the edge off - trouble is as we hit the turf he gets quite lively - which is annoying when I've never been one to canter on every grassy strip we come across! I'll have someone else on their sensible mare with me so will just let him go!

Thanks for advice :)

I think this is about damage control!

Hat, Bp, gloves. Perhaps a martingale? Lunge and ride for a bit before If you can get him going well in the school you're more likely to get him going well out of the school.

Don't anticipate it, you'll make him worse! And make sure the pony you're going with isn't a physo.

Enjoy it! Stay safe though:)

He's been coming back into work for a month? After how long off? And for injury, or ....

A month is a VERY short time for bringing a horse back into work after injury - or even after a couple of months off. I would be avoiding the grassy tracks - or he might be needing more time off!

He's fine, we've long reined and ridden short hacks since before Christmas and gentle schooling. Had the all clear from Rossdales at Newmarket and the vet on our yard. Now have had shoes on for last 2 weeks so needed to get it done as he was just getting silly!
Anyhow, we went with 2 friends and kept it steady, after a short lunge to get rid of initial liveliness, we had some yip yip bucks and leaps but he was very happy! That long friesian mane comes in handy :)
