Well half wasted anyway. Arrived early, not been there before to find the xc and SJ miles away - eek. B walked the course I got numbers and got w ready, just about made it to dressage with a 4 minute warmup, so did a bad test.

Whilst getting w ready I had also got F out of lorry and taken her boots and rug off as it was quite hot and sunny. Put F back on rubber lined lorry whilst W was dressage.

Got F back off lorry, went to stud her and saw that she had badly sliced bulb of heel and 1 bulb (near, outside, back leg) was hanging off. Got vet, antibiotics etc, really can't see how she did it.
She can't have been trodden on, too clean, not bruised and on wrong side.
She can't have trodden on her self - as before.
Didn't do it in lorry - nothing sharp and no blood except wheer it had dripped whilst she was standing

We were parked on the hard standing and it was very flinty too BUT the cut went down ward not upward as it would do if she trod on something.

It will remain one of lifes mysterys, albeit an expensive one, although I did get start fee back.

Had to then wait for hours until the SJ changed for PNP. W then was so fed up she wasn't concentrating and got 2 down, but had a great time XC.
 
oh dear...horses do manage to do these things though, could it have been done before her being in the lorry? i.e. in the morn?

sorry to hear that thoguh, must have been very expensive...

at least W was good?!

We take a bike when we go there now. Hope F recovers quickly.
 
Thanks, no all the blood was fresh and there was nothing inside her boots which covered her heels, it's very odd, we think it must have been a flint but can't work out how the cut was downwards, it looked just like she had been sliced with a knife - would be a brave person to do that though she can flash her back legs about when she is cross.

She doesn't thrash around when left in the lorry, just stands quietly, we were quite near the lorry for dressage so would have heard if she was kicking. Anyway I have lined the horse area with Equimat wall mats, so she couldn't cut herself on those.

Poor horse hasn't run at her last 3 events.

Burnham Mkt, E in SJ after kept waiting for 45 mins then being sent in with no warning and not allowed a quick pop

Oasby, put her back on lorry after dressage in all the rain as B's hip was hurting her and she had already jumped W.

then Tweseldown.

She is getting rather confused about why I take her out and don't let her play.
 
O thistle and B.... we are so sorry that your season has ended like this....
We hope F heals quickly and at least W got to have a fun XC run...
You have had some really fantastic moments in your year... and we are sure you will come out fighting again next year.

Could it have been a fixing from the equimats (though you say she doesn't kick out in the box??) So unlucky for you, but glad was a good day otherwise!

Our stable doors are lined with rubber mats secured with screws and washers (metal washers though rather than plastic), I think plastic ones sound much safer.

My TB has had a bit of sheep wire through her heel when XC schooling, and a punctured sole standing on a 'barbed wire' twist dropped by the contractor replacing our fencing, so I know all about 'unlucky' injuries.

Hope all is healed up soon.

Bloody miles is what I said when I got there!! Friend I was with said that the last time she went, it was all much closer to each other. She then made me run most of the xc course too grrr

I heard all of the commentary for the xc as was walking the course at the same time so glad W kept the spirits up. Really sorry I didn't get to make actual contact! I did try and look out for you but with the constant too-ing and frow-ing, it was hard to try and get to everywhere at the same time.

Saw that F had been withdrawn so wondered what had happened. Hope she's relatively ok though - silly pony.
 
Well I'm off to Cyprus early tomorrow so she had better be oK.

The antibiotics are a precaution as location of damage difficult to keep clean and bandaged, vet feels she will be better out allowing it to drain so her legs don't fill. Luckily our fields are clean and no mud yet.

It just has to be washed with hibiscrub 2x day, F and W were having a mini holiday next week anyway then it should be healed enough to work.

The severed bit should just shrivel and drop off . She is not even lame but I keep seeing her resting that leg.

Glad one of them got a good run, but poor horse probably does wonder why she never gets a turn. Next year HAS to start better.

You'll probably never know what it was - I had one of those once where a horse cut herself - upwards, into the knee - in her stable. It resulted in surgery. No fittings/fixtures that she could have done it on, absolutely nothing! It left us scratching our heads permanently. Horses!
 
Well she has exercised herself round the field today, not at all lame and it's clean and pink inside. The flap is open so easy to hose out and then pour dilute hibiscrub into so should heal well.
