I am thinking about trying my mare on regumate. Once every 3 weeks approx she becomes really nappy and explosive. This morning had me off then galloped round the school like a stallion!
She isn’t particularly marish any other time and had her ovaries scanned as clear.
What’s peoples experience of hormones and Regumate. Is it worth trying? Roughly how pricy is it?
Thank you

£208 a bottle, cheaper if bought with a prescription by about £25. It is worth trying. I have a mare who dropped performance, didn't want to canter right, was mardy to tack up, naughty to catch with a tendency to try to poke me with a front foot. Unsound behind at times. Would not go forwards and seek a contact etc. She also had a strange dipping movement behind and would always stand resting a hind.

She had a full work up and body scan, nothing remarkable found, degree of change in both hocks and C5 and 6 sore. SI sore, all 3 probably linked to way of going and tension. This mare managed to gather 8 comments of tension in her last test. Came home from horspital with an impressive bill and no information that made me think we were getting somewhere.

Bottle of regumate given to me to try. 13ml a day and on day 3 I had a different horse. This mare didn't display any obvious signs of being or coming into season so was impossible to keep a reliable record/diary of. Since being on regumate I have kept a diary on white board in her box detailing attitude and we now have a regular behaviour pattern, although still no signs of being in season. She has around 15 days of being an angel, willing, forwards and a fun ride. Then day 16 to 21 she is moody but nothing like pre regumate.

I have been advised to commence tapering the dose in November and getting her off it until February 2026.

Mine suffered with colic like symptoms a day or so before she came season, we tried regumate and completely different horse! I was unconvinced until we tried it, and a couple of times we’ve tried coming off but each time she’s so unhappy (and explosive).

That’s interesting as mine can be bolshy to tack up too and paws with her front feet. It’s worth a try I guess. Will discuss with vet and go from there I think

I would speak to your vet and try a 2-4 week trial, as said above its nasty stuff to handle and you have to be careful who handles it (definitley not pregnant women, women trying to conceive, younger girls/children etc) and you need gloves to handle it, separate buckets etc. Its worth a try though because if it does help there are long term hormonal alternatives which are less risk to you/others.
