Hello,
I saw my vet yesterday for my 8yo gelding who was diagnosed with navi as a 6yo. He has been on and off lame since then, with nothing appearing to help (remedial shoeing, barefoot, navilox, tildren, shockwave, etc).
If you remember my last post about TB's living out - not that I expect you to - you'll remember me saying he's a bit of a livewire and not ideally suited to being in a yard environment without working (as he has a tendency to hoon around and injure himself).
The riding is not the be-all and end-all for me, I've done without it since I've had him, but it's got to a point where I either do something, or he goes to live out his years in a herd at a local retirement place. He's only 8, so I want to see other options through first.
So my vet came out yesterday after a particularly lame fortnight, and agreed that we've run out of options - her suggestion, therefore, was a neurectomy (surgery), which I personally am not keen on.
Her second option, after my negative response to the above, was a chemical neurectomy - not of the WHOLE foot, just the heel (pulmar digital neurectomy I believe it is called, although I may be wrong), which can be effective for 3 - 6 months at a fraction of the cost and far less stress.
Have any of you had experience with this? Much as I appreciate input and suggestions, I am not looking for opinions of neurectomies (I know they can be strong) just experiences with the temporary chemical procedure. It's a hard situation to conceive from an outside perspective if you yourself haven't been in it, so please go easy on me!
Thanks in advance,
Anna
