Following on from the ‘should i sell my horse over the phone’ saga i have decided to be ruled by heart instead of head and not sell my horse at all. He was my first horse and i’ve had a lot of fun with him so i think i owe it to him to make sure that his future is secure. However, it still remains that i don’t really have the time to give him lots of attention and really i could do with the money in my pocket every month instead of paying for a horse i do very little with...so have decided that looking for a proper loan home is hopefully going to be the solution. Have tried to find loaners before but always to stay at present yard so thats been too difficult... i figure that he would be fine going to a new home so long as i could check on him regularly.
Now i know that i can download the template loan form from the bhs but there are certain clauses that i would like to write into it and also i have a few questions about loans and how they work that hopefully some of you lovely people will be able to help me with!
- I would like the horse to be insured for vet’s fees. Not bothered about value for death, just vet’s fees. Would i just transfer over the payment of my existing policy or would the loaner take out their own policy?
- My horse wears heart bars because my farrier feels this is the most suitable shoe for him- he’s not had a problem in the 4 years he’s been wearing these so i would like to stick with it. My farrier charges £80 a set with the heart bars, as opposed to £55 a set normally. I was thinking then of saying to a loaner that i would pay £25 per shoeing to help cover the cost of the heartbars. Is this normal?
- I would like monthly visits- again, is this normal- or a bit stalkerish?
Anything else that i haven’t thought about that might not be in the standard agreement? Many thanks :)

Oh and one more thing...horse’s saddle is a very GC Albion M2M saddle. How do i ensure this is looked after properly?

Hi. I use the BHS loan agreement for my mare who is out on loan. I would just write in that the horse should be shod with heart bar shoes and that you would like to visit monthly. My loaner is brilliant and I just send a text when we want to visit and we agree a date and time convenient to both of us.
Write the make, model and condition of the saddle on the agreement and state that apart from normal wear and tear the saddle must be regularly cleaned and kept in good condition.
I don't pay for any costs towards the horse or her keep and the loaner has taken out her own insurance for vets fees etc. She got the insurance through pet plan and they wrote to me as the owner stating that she had insurance for my horse.
Hope you find a good loaner there are some out there, my horse has been out on loan for 6 months now and the loaner is going to buy her.

thanks katherine...its good to hear nice loan stories for once :) i actually just looked through the bhs agreement and it looks very comprehensive, which is good :)

I will PM you one that I have used several times, it's more detailed than the BHS one to allow the parties to deal with slightly more quirky non standard equine issues and written in more normal less legal English. It also includes a schedule dealing with tack.

I'm a loanee, and I wouldn't mind my horse's owner coming to visit monthly. At the moment she doesn't visit at all, and never has (though I was a sharer for this horse before hand, so not a complete unknown), though she has asked to visit him prior to renewing the loan agreement shortly. From a loanee's point of view I would rather more frequent visits than none at all; I'm just glad I've got this particular horse and not somebody less trustworthy! So long as you both know where you stand and the visits are flexible so they don't interfere with the horse's work schedule, I don't see a problem :)
