Appreciate feedback on your experiences of buying horse/pony from Cavan/Goresbridge (Irl). Thinking of attending both sales in Jan and Feb to seek a well-used 5/6-yr old pony/cob for a happy hacking type life with me.

But if you've bought something similar in the past, was what you bought as experienced as you thought it was going to be or still pretty green? Feel free to PM me if you'd like.

Beau came from Goresbridge, the sports horse sales, they have some lovely horses but some are quite pricey!
Beau is one in a million, paces to die for, taught my novice OH to ride from scratch, never put a foot wrong , 100% genuine.

We love him so much, exactly as described!!

Never been to goresbridge but have been to cavan plenty of times as I used to show the horses and ponies that where for sale for my boss .

There are some great quality horses there, with good breeding ... definitely worth a look x

Price wise .... it really does vary . Really depends on the day x , The catalogues should be out ? If not they should be out soon , if you ring either centres they will be able to tell you when they are out and can post one out for you . Good luck , just out of interest what kind of horse are you looking for ?

yep, have bought young horses at goresbridge. Great please to buy youngsters, but anything with breeding will make money.

I think its probably a bit more trickly to buy a nice 'made' ridden horse there, as there's not much oppertunity to try out horses properly before you buy. So its ok with youngsters as you're not buying a supposedly trained horse, but with older horses if you can a safe quiet ride (for example) its hard to really check in the 20 mins before a sale if this horse is actually that.

Also, if a horse aged 5 or 6 upwards is good being ridden / jumped / performance he's probably more likely to be sold privately as he'd probably get more money as people would have heard of his reputation.

I was at the monthly sales in goresbride last march (1 day) so I think there was maybe over 100 horses (mares, young, old, foals, yearlings, etc) but if you're looking for specific horse size / age etc worth a start but not sure you'd have enough things to look at. i think they do performance sales as well every few months, which'd have more horses.

If you want to buy something which is actually guaranteed in writing, I can recommend a yard in Dublin who will actually give you a full written guarantee that your horse is what they describe it as.

I have taught pupils at their yard & they bring on horses excellently, in the horses time, and do sell using the ronseal ' does exactly what it says on the tin' approach.

here you go anyway, worth a look

A "well-used 5/6 year old" will probably be just that, backed at 2 and gone non-stop ever since, but likely to be totally unschooled as well! I buy from Cavan regularly - you can get some crackers - good luck!
