Experiences of claiming for loss of use.

So I was successful in my loss of use claim, she just needs to be branded now. I also need to decide what to do with her. She's going back to the vets next week for the steroid injection, but I'll be paying for treatment now not my insurance company so no MRI or arthroscopy. Currently I don't want to ride her as I'm actually quite nervous now, and I can't just go and buy another to ride as I only have the time and finances to keep one at DIY livery.
 
I’ve successfully claimed LOU in two horses with two different insurers and had both stamped and then they were retired. At least you have the value back on the horse and can do what you want or what is best for her now. Worst comes to the worst you can consider PTS in the future without worrying about insurance and knowing you’ve done all you can for her.
 
It depends whether I keep her to be honest, I can't buy another as I don't have the time or finances for another as well. Which means I don't have a horse to ride, which considering I bought her a year ago to ride, is really frustrating. I will need to get my confidence back anyway, and I could keep her sound with steroids and ride her but considering her history of bolting I don't want to risk it. I may try and rehome as a broodmare or companion, I bought her from her breeder and I have asked if he wants her back but he's not replied so obviously not.
 
If you do not want to keep her as a riding horse, if she responds to treatment, or as a pet then the kindest option for any horse with a degenerative condition would be to pts once you have been paid out, you may find a companion home but if you sell there is a risk she will be moved on at some point even with the freezemark, she is not a viable broodmare prospect for anyone in reality and again could be passed on if you sell, if you loan there is the possibility she will be returned with little notice at any time so I would seriously consider having her pts before spending any more money or emotion on her, it would be kindest in the long run and secure her future completely.
 
It's a hard decision to make, if I had the my own land or loads of money then I would keep her as companion, but I don't. I could keep her and not have my own horse to ride, but I'm not sure I'd want to do that. I also own another who is out on loan as a hack because of sacroiliac issues, so there is a possibility of her coming back too, although the loaner is very happy with her so I can't see that happening just yet but you never know. My current one was her replacement.
Don't know what to do to be honest, seems selfish to have her PTS when she could stay with me, I'd just have to forego having a horse to ride. Obviously if it couldn't be controlled by steroids and she was pain then it wouldn't be such a hard decision to make. But she is only 2/10ths lame and I struggle to see the lameness myself! I'm not in any rush to make a decision so she's not going anywhere just.
 
Hi was just wondering what insurance company you were dealing with - i am currently trying to get loss of use for a 5 year old with MRI diagnosed arthritis and navicular. He was being sold but i need an idea of time frames - as they won't let me put him to sleep as they say it may jeopardise his claim (which is ridiculous) we have vets reports, and MRI reports.

They are saying it may take up to 3 months! and i cannot cancel the policy in the meantime.
