Experiences of claiming with Pet Plan

I've not claimed on my horse who I've only had for 3 months but my dog is insured with them and needed an op on his eye which came to £1,500 and they paid out easily with no quibble :) They were really good to deal with which was why I chose to insure my pony with them.

I've claimed twice this year on one horse and claimed once last year on another horse. They've always paid promptly. And all of our claims have been pretty large £1500 x2 and one at £4500. Very pleased with them.

Yes they do pay out promptly. I have had 2 claims, 1 for daughter's cob that required tendon surgery. We opted to get pre agreement for the surgery and that happened quickly. Everything was paid out very promptly once we submitted the invoices. I also claimed for my mare who had laminitis and several xrays, drugs and treatment and then paid out for her when I sadly had to have her pts. There was no difficulty from them regarding the vet's decision.
I have 3 insured with them now.

Echo others experience, they were easy to deal with and quick to pay out. If ever I phoned them, they were lovely and very helpful.
However, no longer have mine insured for vet bills. Prefer to pay the vet directly.

Pet plan were brilliant for me, i had not long purchased insurance with them when pony lost all his legs. they have paid out no questions asked, always been helpful when i have called asking silly questions :)

Always been really good for me. paid out 3 times in last 5 five years and they have not been small claims either. i always get them to pay my vet direct so its no hassle for me :)

I am afraid they were less than lovely when I had to have one PTS a few years ago. It was an injury which did not improve after 7 months of box rest, the AHT (Sue Dyson) said he would not improve, he was unable to be turned out as he was not paddock sound. They paid the vet bills but then wanted all sorts of things before he was PTS and said unless they had the paperwork and inspected the horse themselves they would not pay out on his value - he was insured for 5K which was less than his value but I had not increased it recently. They would not give a clear indication of when or where or who would inspect the horse despite endless telephone conversations. I eventually sent them a fax (pre email days!) saying he would be PTS at x time on x day and if they chose not to pay out so be it - the horse needed to be put out of his suffering. They did not reply and were unhelpful/quite nasty on the phone.

Strangely I wrote to them to inform them and cancel the policy after the event and did not expect anything from them. A cheque appeared in the return post for the full amount. I will never use them again though as I felt they made me jump through awful hoops while my horse suffered. It was bad enough losing the horse without fighting with insurance people as well.

KBIS have been amazing and I will continue to use them. Very different attitude when I lost another horse....

I've used petplan since 1999 for all my horses. They've always been fantastic. This year I had claims for both my horses, Connie with her suspected pelvis fracture (subsequently pts) they paid all fees and for her death & Mickey and his stomach ulcers, they were genuinely wonderful, paid quickly and kept me informed!

Fine with my recent claim for physio for my old girl when she randomly hurt her back in the field. Despite the vet thinking they probably wouldn't pay out as she has tendon issues and arthritis that Pet Plan could have tried to link tge pain too. Paid up no question.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience misst

Yeah it was pretty nasty at the time. I have to admit that I seem to have been unlucky but I never recommend them as at the one time I needed them to be nice they were thoroughly unpleasant. It was not about the money - I was amazed when they paid out. It was a hard time made harder by them.

they pay out for vets fees quickly, they exclude even quicker and are less than good for paying out for death. Had an awful experience with them this year with a horse dying from melanoma. several friends/friends of friends have experienced similar with very different scenarios-would not use again.

So it is not only me - and they have not changed since my experience a view years ago then. :-(

my horse, at massive risk of obstructive colic/bleeding out from huge melanoma inside rectum, already showing signs of severe obstruction and ulceration; a friends stallion who had ingested bog myrtle who had to be kept in the dark indefinitely because his photosensitivity was so bad (they had for 6 months with no improvement in his bloodwork, horse was getting dangerous so owner called it on welfare grounds), friend of a friends 6yo WB with a bone cyst deemed inoperable by the AHT, treated medically but prognosis boxrest only indefinitely, no turn out at all (for a 6yo?!) after 9months boxrest already.

What really sucks with these cases is that they would have paid out for further treatment at least for mine, even though there was no treatment available that would have worked, it just would have prolonged his suffering. He wasn't worth alot, I wasn't expecting very much but they would have paid out more for more useless drugs. what was the point?!

Pet Plan. ....AARGH!!! ... Don't get me started. Where can I buy a very long barge pole!! Had some tack stolen ... Lost nearly £5k worth, paid out £1,200 ... Blood pressure rising as I type. NEVER EVER GOING THERE AGAIN!! Dreadful experience!!

i didnt have a good time with them last year :/ my horse has had locking stifles since she was a year old 5 now - its not very regular and has only had 3 attacks in the last 2 years but when she locks she locks bad and has had to be sedated 3 times to be un locked. in the begining vets said she would out grow it then last year she had two bad attacks quite close together and the vet advised looking down the 'fixing route'. pet plan knew about the case but i hadnt claimed because it was less than the excess each time and when i phoned them they said that they would support the surgery if we wrote a pro forma and had the vets write a 'case study' sort of thing explaining why they had decided she needed fixing now not when it first happened. did all this and vet was very good but then the changed their minds and said the wouldnt pay out, after huge battle we gave up. could have probably fought harder and try ombudsman but it was like banging our head against the wall, very frustrating. i compleetly get that for regular things you need to claim within a year - but when it is often a developmental issue that would often resolve itself a year isnt long enough. but looking back they would have never paid out anyway because had we asked for the surgery within the 12months the vets wouldnt have backed us up as she would hav only been two rising 3 and they said she would grow out of it, and then when the vets said that it was unlikely she'd grow out of it, it was too late.

the dog on the other hand is a sensitive little thing and kept having little skin niggles which the parents paid for as and when they cropped up untill we added up all of the 'little bits here and there' - vet said they could claim it back retrospectivly and they paid out no questions asked for all of his treatment which amounted to quite a few hundred pound!

have just claimed for my dog. He did his cruciate ligament, £3k worth of vets fees. Op was about 4 weeks ago, and just had a letter saying they have paid in full.

Fantastic service.

The small animal PetPlan is fab as they offer lifetime cover, so can continue to claim for as long as you haven't met the full insured amount. Great for things like diabetes that requires regular insulin.

Unfortunately PetPlan Equine isn't the same...
