Im currently looking for a subject on which to cover for my final project of my BSc and recently (i can't remember where or why) a few of you posted saying that your navicular horses greatly improved when you made the decision to try going barefoot, this greatly intrigued me due to the fact that one of the most common treatments is corrective shoeing. This interest has grown to questioning whether I could carry this out as my study, therefore it would be greatly appreciated if you could possibly provide me with some information, such as whos idea it was to try this and whether corrective shoeing was tried first? This is currently only an idea, but If it works out I would also be very grateful if there was anybody that would be willing to provide information for case studies. Please feel free to either reply on this thread or pm me (or if you would prefer i can provide my email address).

Many thanks x

My mare was diagnosed with navicular syndrome in 2002, we spent the summer going down the route of bute, steriod injections, corrective shoeing. All failed so we claimed LOU, we then removed her shoes and turned her away for the winter. After the winter she became sound, we then put normal shoes on her front feet only. ^ years later she is sound as a pound and back competing again. She now has front shoes only and barefoot behind.
If you want more infomation I can get you more info as we have several vet reports etc

Your best bet is to contact one of the equine podiatry associations. They will be able to direct you to the latest research papers from vet schools here and abroad, and also trimmers that are trimming and documenting the progress of navicular horses.

Also look at the sites of the barefoot 'guru's - Jamie Jackson, KC La Pierre etc. Again there will be links to articles and also forums with many posts on this topic
