Experiences/thoughts of chestnut mares??

My first horse was a chestnut mare, and I can honestly say she was the most honest horse ever to look through a bridle. She was really genuine, and I trusted her with my life. She really was my horse of a lifetime, and consequently I have a soft spot for chestnuts, even though my two are both bays! Rest In Peace my darling Juno.

I have known certain chestnut mares be worse than certain bay mares and cetain grey geldings be worse than chestnut mares and so on and so forth. It is all down to the horses temprement and situation not thier colour.

hi,

I have a chestnut mare and I literally love mine to death. Whilst she is perfect, she is also very opinionated so it's best not to get in an argument in the first place. However, I don't think it has anything to with the fact that she is chestnut - probably just because she is a mare ... lol

Would never be put off Chestnut Mares.

Can anyone remember that rhyme...

The fleetest of all horses is the chestnut
The most spirited the black
...

Can't remember the rest...

well i love my chestnut mare
well shes liver chestnut
and arab x tb
everyone warned me shed be mad
which she is.. but i personally think thats cos of her bloodlines and the lack of trust she had in us to start with

i read somewhere...

if you get a good chestnut mare, it will be a bloody good one

I am a chestnut mare and would definitely say beware..... Lol

I really dont think it is anything to do with the colour, i had a chestnut mare and she was amazing.

Replying to myself...

The fleetest of all horses is the chestnut
The most spirited the black
The most enduring the bay
The most blessed the one with a white mark on his forehead.

personally i don't think the colour makes the slightest bit of difference.

BUT as most of my horses are sold on after a year or 2 i won't buy a chestnut mare due to peoples unfounded superstitions keeping the price down.

My old mare a very chestnut chestnut with four white socks, had the sweetest nature, if you were a person, but would even chase rabbits out of her field!! She was also not the sharpest of creatures, but I put that down to her being welsh!!

I have a chestnut mare, and she's excellent ; very honest and loving although she does have the typical chestnut mare stubbon streak lol

First chestnut mare was definately a product of the devil!

Second one was my horse of a lifetime!!!

I love mares, chestnut ones especially!!

I love a chestnut mare, I was very lucky when trying to breed a future superstar broodmare, to get not just a filly but a chestnut one too. She's 2 now, a total sweetheart and a fabulous mover. But she is the only chestnut I have at the moment, but through chance rather than design

Iv known 3 chestnut mares and two chestnut geldings...2 of the mares are complete nutters... one whos a 13 hand connemara comes complete with 4 white socks and a hobby of harrassing and chasing charlais cattle so much they jump electric fences

she also trys the same with smalll children

The other mare, Honey, is the kindest friendliest horse i have ever come across...both the geldings were a bit mental as well but one of the problems was definately due to breeding in the geldings!!

They were all very very pretty horses tho!and so easy to make look well!

see the chestnut in my sig - she was also TB and was my horse of a lifetime - over complicated and could be a total nightmare - but when you needed her to be sensible she was, when you wanted a hug she was perfect, and she was (in my mind) the most beautiful horse in the world. my horse of a lifetime.

I have never believed the 'chestnut' thing, and actually in my experience grey mares (although i do love them) have actually been more difficult then any chestnut - its unfortunate that this old fashioned 'saying'/'feeling' exists.

We have a 13.2 chestnut mare, she is fast, fizzy and the best pony we have ever owned. She is now 18 (going on 8 yrs) and she has only had 4 homes in her life so we are obviously not the only ones who think she is special. Only problem now is finding her another little person to teach as mums don't seem to like chestnut mares for their little people. I would pay the earth for a drug to grow her to 14.2 so we could continue riding her.

I had a chestnut mare over 10 years ago and she was a nightmare. Kept jumping fences was very lazy stubborn wasn't the word. Everyone kept on telling me dont get a "CHESTNUT MARE". But i did and then i sold her and i promised myself i would not get an other one ever again.

But my first pony i had died 9 years ago( still get sad as he was me bestfriend) and i have ad loads of horses in between but just can not connect with them.

I'm just back in to horses the past year after having a 6 year brake for family and have had 2 horses but i did not connect with them either so on both times i took back to the dealer and exchanged and GUESS WHAT I GOT

sorry to have gone on.

Had a bay/brown mare - NIGHTMARE!! defnintely not the safest horse I've ever been on/around, then had a palomino gelding - my horse of a lifetime & best friend but not very good in traffic now have a chestnut mare with 4 white socks & she is FAB - good in traffic, nice person & safe even though she has the Welsh D sparkle !!

A friend had a chestnut mare and a black mare - the chestnut was an absolute darling & the black could be an evil witch.

Definitely an old wives tale - colour doesn't affect temperament - breeding & upbringing does !!
