I was wondering if anyone had any experience with anaemia in horses? I understand that it is a secondary problem and will need further investigation...

I've had my mare blood tested today as she has been quite off and not herself. Everything has came back normal apart from her red blood count; the first test it came back at 27 and the second test it came back at 18. My vet has sent of the remainder of blood to the lab for further testing because of the big difference so I won't know the results until tomorrow evening now. Obviously I'm worried as 18 is low! :( She is perkier than she was yesterday, but I know she still isn't right.

I think I'm going to have a rocking horse next

Mine had it but can't remember what levels. He was on an iron supplement for a month and off work and bloods retested. Levels back to normal so he came back into work. Had another blood test after a month and still normal then after 6 months and still normal. Never had a problem again and we didn't investigate further

My lad has anaemia at the moment and is below par in himself. He is an older horse at 23 and has cushings which is thought to be involved in the problem.

Can be many things. mine had it a few years ago, cant remember levels. Vet scared me with all the possibilities, but after further blood tests revealed nothing we decided on a treatment of a month off 😊 Levels were returning to normal at that point & 2months later completely normal. Not had a problem since. Vet just said probably a virus, which I'm sure is vet speak for no idea, but horse is fine so I don't mind.

My youngster became very anaemic after blood poisoning from a cut that was left un treated when I was away on holiday & was left on livery with my previous YO and also developed a heart murmur from it :(. He became very very poorly and was very close to losing him.

He came out of it very well after antibiotics, penicillin injections and I also put him on a 3month course of NAF BLK (Blood, Liver & Kidney) which I highly recommend and did absolute wonder's for him.

Moved yards and he is flourishing now which I am absolutely over the moon about after having nearly lost my boy! He was only 5 when this all happened but a year later he looks & feels as healthy as a horse ;)

Sorry to say my experience was poor. Ask vet re white cell count if your result is very low

Im sorry to hear that :( Her white cell count is normal.

That's interesting. My mare is 15 and I was considering getting her tested. I'll have a look into that further as well. Thank you!
