afternoon , i am trying my tb on calm and conditon by allen and page as very difficult to maintain is weight , anybody had good results with this ? thanks
 
I used it at the request of an owner, on their poor TB and found it to be useless.

I am having success on a horse of my own with Allen and Page Veteran Vitality, I do add a mug of linseed, alpha oil and speedibeet. Very pleased so far, horse is aged, 17.2 and a picky feeder plus low level cushings.
 
yes my boy has added 60 kilo he was very poor, I use fast fibre as well.I have used it on my last 3 horses if they really struggle I have added oil or linseed to help with calories.
 
I have found its a useful feed for maintaining the weight of a poor doer but for actually putting weight on its pretty useless. In fact I find the huge amounts you end up having to feed when soaked can put a lot of horses off.
IMO better results can be achieved with cheaper feed regimes.
 
I didn't find the calm bit to be true! I have my poor doer tb on Alfa a oil and some extra soya oil, spedi beat, micronised linseed and some grass nuts and in three weeks he has gotten so much better on that
 
Almost completely useless... The amount you have to feed is insane as well.

ERS pellets are very good, and don't hot them up either in our experience.
 
Thought it was vile. Pony developed horrid fatty pads but not overall condition. He's now on mainly fibre with speedibeet and linseed and is glossy and happy.
 
Certainly the 'calm' bit was not the case with my horse. Soaked sugar beet, good hay/haylage, a good mix/nuts and oil have worked for me every time.
 
At first it put the weight on really well. However, the longer she was on it, the crazier she got and spent most of her time careering around the field working off all the calories I was putting in!

I really like Veteran Vitality, also an Allen&Page product. Puts weight on slowly without excess energy. :)
 
My boy can be sharp and gets very spooky but it's a struggle to keep weight on him. He's on Alfa A Oil, Happy Hoof and Baileys No. 4 (the topline nuts) which have worked wonders :) Though about trying him on Calm and Condition so very glad I didn't!!
 
Useless stuff. Bailey's No 4 works for my TB but am just switching over to TopSpec Joint balancer to see if it's any good. Idea is that it'll save me expensive joint supplement.....
 
It'll be interesting if you can report back on the Topspec Joint. I swear by Topspec, even though my lad is barefoot and there is some contraversy using it for barefooters, he really has never looked better, had such fantastic feet, or gone so well.
 
Me too, picky eater tb would eat it which was a start, and he looked fab through the summer but it didn't really keep his condition on through the winter. I don't mind him getting fizzy because he's a lazy soul, but Competition Mix has kept his weight on well this winter :)
 
Rubbish I prefer to feed copra coolstance with fast fibre and hifi lite to my tb and he looks stonking!
 
It is ok. i have fed Billy on it and results were ok. But I had to feed boiled oats as well to try and up his weight.

Tbh he is fed bluegrass releve at the moment (no ulcers, just wanted a low starch mix!) and he looks fantastic on it. He has kept his weight and looks really well on it, and actually only gets a scoop a day at the moment. It might be worth changing the base mix to something low starch but 12 or 14% to maintain calories :)
 
I have my heavy draught on it and she loves it! In the cold weather I soak the feed using hot water.
We've had no problems with her going crazy or misbehaving in anyway.
My mare has a good topline, shine on her coat and is holding her weight well.

Hi Shysmum - well we're 3 weeks in and he's a different horse on the Topspec joint. I was pleased with the Baileys no.4 (which he still has a bit of as I change over REALLY slowly!) Looks fantastic and is working really well - he's also unshod behind and hasn't been 'footy'. Went out today and did 2 dressage tests and didn't lose it nor look like a racehorse but like a proper horse.
 
Found baileys No 4 topline cubes better than Calm and Condition, fed C and C all last year and it maintained one of my TB's, but feeding baileys and linseed this year and he looks like a bullock!
 
Works very well on my ID x. Keeps him calm and he puts on weight. However friends tb went loopy on it and just maintained weight rather than putting it on. Think it very much depends on the horse. I love Allen and pages stuff for mine!
