i have a pony on loan for the summer and she lives in a field with my other horse, the field is sectioned into 2 with electric fencing. but every time i go to take my other horse out she always escapes, the first time i tried to take my horse out i took her out of the field and was just about to get on, turned around to see the pony galloping down the field (already cleared the electric fencing) heading towards a heavy 5ft metal gate. she attempted to jump the gate but scraped her back legs on the top and the whole thing came down with her and she came limping over to me. luckily she wasnt badly injured and had just scraped a bit of fur off her back legs and she wasnt lame the next day. so a few weeks later i had fixed the gate and i had hung a big piece of tarpaulin from the trees above the gate so it was too high for her to jump and she couldnt see my horse walk away from her. i took my horse out and walked about 10ft down the lane and waited there to see if she had calmed down, i then heared a noise in the field next to mine. it was the pony, she had climed up the hedge through trees and bushes and then slid down the other side on her side into a boggy streem/ditch and was galloping round the field nextdoor. even when i ride my horse in the other half of the field where the pony can see her she still jumps over the electric fencing and follows me round.

anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem which doesnt include getting another pony to keep her company (havnt got enough grass) or stabling her (havnt got a stable) all ideas would be a great help as i really dont want to send her back and dont want her to hurt herself.

Hi

I have the same problem with one of mine.

Afraid the solutions are as you've described.

Either need to shut pony in a stable with the top door shut too, acquire a 3rd pony to keep the 2nd company, or find someone to take it out for you when you ride yours. Or, can you take the pony with you? Ride and lead?

My mare just about killed herself doing exactly as yours has. She'd go over any gate, fence or hedge to follow. She attempted to jump out of my field shelter and hung herself over the wall, and was badly injured.
