I've started showing my exracehorse - only at local level.
I'm unsure about what 'type' he is.

He's 16.2hh and at my last show the judge said he had a lot of bone and was shocked he was only a flat racer.
So I'm thinking he's a hunt type, but how can I be sure? Or is it subjective to the judge?

Thanks in advance.

It can be quite judge subjective to be honest. You may get away with a lightweight hunter but then he may do well as a large riding horse. I did quite well with my boy in both riding horse and small small hunter as he was bang on 15.2 so didn't usually do well against the larger hunters in the lightweight hunter class.

There is a very fine line between lightweight hunter and riding horse and in some ways it may come down to how they go rather than build, so a riding horse would probably have a little more extravagant movement and a hunter a bit more workmanlike. The only real difference in tack turn out is plain or velvet browband so I would say which does he look best in - does he have a pretty head which suits the velvet browband or does he look better in the plain one. I had one (not an ex racehorse but 7/8ths TB) who showed as a sports horse, a competition horse, a light horse, a riding club horse, a hunter and a riding horse - for affiliated showing he was a riding horse though but he would do riding horse and hunter at the same show unaffiliated if different judges.
