As above, reschooling him and keeps doing this? Would changing the bit/nose band help?

Any help/advice will be so great or stories :P

it seems to be a coping mechanism. mine does it, and i noticed that alot of the racers at aintree were doing it. i just let him get on with it. he soon stopped when he realised there was nothing to get anxious or excited about.

well i dont have an ex racer but my pony was a showjumper and she was absoloutly crazy, she crossed her jaw and not only grinded on the bit but competely refused to accept that it was there for control and would ignore it.

we put her in a flash noseband on the tightest we could because we do not like grackle as they are well not severe but not necesary and depending on what you want to do, competition wise grackles are not allowed(showing, dressage).

also we have had her in many bits including a happy mouth dutch gag or you could just have a snaffle happy mouth as the plastic mouth piece is nice and soft not cold and hard, she now goes in i think its called a copper roller dee ring french link snaffle. she likes that because she has a very active mouth and you have to ride her with an active hand and she likes to play with the rollers(and its allowed in dressage and showing).

hope it helped let me know if you try and it works :) xx

Hey, i've got him in a flash noseband and a normal metal hanging cheek!

I thought about changing bits over, but didn't want to play to much in his mouth as he's fairly light in the mouth,

Hii,

My ex racer used to do this too. She used to do it all the time which used to worry me, especially when she was schooling but now she just does it now and then just when she is anxious. I spoke to the dentist about it and he said it is quite common and is just a sign of anxiety. Now when she starts it I just ride her through it :)

if he's in a flash, he shouldnt be able to cross his jaw?! Do you have it tight enough?
Maybe try a french link in his mouth, could be trying to avoid the nutcracker part.......

It's a sign of stress but can become a habit.

Best option is to first off simplify everything- loose ring jointed snaffle, loose cavesson and put in time and patient schooling
