Hello

Sorry for another exracer thread but I'm getting one. I've been to see a few and have another to go to, all helped by some lovely members of HHO.

One question I have for those who own and have bought them is what height were they and how tall are you and what discipline do you do?

I've seen a few around 16/ 16.1 and I'm just not sure. I'm 5'11 and my other horse is a smidge over 16'3 and a big chunky WB with it. Pic below for comparison. The ones I see around 16'2 or bigger appeal more but is that just because I'm used to that height, my old TB was also round 16'3 but did have massive withers...
Will welcome any opinions if you think I'm being daft and a 16'1 will take my leg fine(they have all been quite deep in girth)

Im taller than you and ride a 15.1.

I dont really care what anyone else thinks...he can carry me easily and he does take up some leg as he is quite rotund.

Ive had to adapt my riding and we compete regularly and no one makes a comment about size.

I think mine exraced as she came over from ireland but we didnt buy her till she was 12. She is 15hh and very slightly built (narrow saddle, pony boots etc) and I am 5ft6 (9 stone) and do dressage but used to jump.

Reg is 16.3hh, and solid for a TB I think. Al is 5'6 or so, and she events him.

And for some comparison, her on a 14.2hh mare (pony she had before Reg) who wasn't tremendously solid:

She's all leg though. He was raced by someone taller (and heavier, I think) than her. From your photo, you'd look fine on him, and I can't imagine the 2 inch difference between 16.1hh and 16.3hh making much of a change!

I'm 5'2 and the exracer above is 16hh.
She is a medium build.

I have ridden 16.3hh ex racers who are very narrow though and my leg can go further down on them than they do with her... So I guess it can vary. Just as my 15hh Arab is even rounder so I still look small on her.

Take some pictures on the horse you're interested in, then compare and have a look when you get home.

Mine's 15.3 and of the lighter build. Im 5'5 and also of a light build! He p2p-ed and NH-ed up to 12st but most were nearer 11 st I think. He's 8 and he raced from 4-5 yrs.
He has just started eventing (done 2 intros, got 1 more then MK 3DE and then prenovicing!)

Currently ride a 15.1hh and a 17.1hh, I'm 5'4"

The 15.1 is a tiny, though very successful ex flat race mare. I do actually feel underhorsed on her, although I'm not! The 17.1 feels much smaller than the other 17hh ISH I ride though I do look fairly wee on him :)

I think you should go with what you feel most comfortable on!! A 16/16.1 may carry you fine but if you think you will always have in the back of your mind that they feel a bit small then go for a bigger one. You will have lots to choose from, may as well go for one thats puuuurfect!
My dude is a leggy full up 16.1 and at 5ft4/5ft5 and 8 stone I look like a pea on a mountain. Mine is as tall as I would want to go tbh. Mine is fairly l/w and lovely and sensitive to ride so I feel very comfortable on him, he can just be quite a lot of long legs to hold together sometimes with my mini legs :p.

I am 5'6'' and mine is an ex flat racer 16hh. He is quite compact but quite wide and well built so I feel better on him than a taller skinnier one I rode a while back.

Mine is 17.2hh with big shoulders, narrow saddle fit, high withered, and deep girth but greyhound like behind :p. His rider is 5ft2 ish. She has to ride longer than she'd like in order to get her leg on. They event at BE Novice, do riding club stuff, drag hunt and fox hunt, hunt relays, hack about and act like a kid on a native pony :)

For comparison this is the same rider on a 13.2hh native pony:

I am about 5ft8 and ride a 16.1hh Irish x TB who does a bit of everything. He is built well and takes up my leg, and I feel comfy on his height, although I'm probably a bit too tall above the saddle. When I ride the grey 17.2 above I feel like there's just too much going on in front and underneath me. At heart I'm really a pony person though!

Hey,
I am 5ft2, and have an exracer, had from 3yrs old, she was 15.3 when i got her, now 16.1 fine/medium build. We event. Being quite short in the leg, i've never really had your problem though! I would wait to see what horse you gel with, regardless of whether a hand either way! What do you plan to do with him/her?

Mine is 16.1 and I'm 5'11, nearly 6ft. sometimes i look at photos and think.. i look huge on him... but usually I then realise i'm just riding with an awful position and look out of place  i feel fine though and he is quite happy to carry me about! I've also got a 15.1 who i can ride no prob, she is a very round cob though, but just accidently aqquired a youngster who probably wont make more than 15.2, and she's a tb, so we'll see what happens there :p:eek:

Mine's 17.1, he's a flat bred but ended up jumping. I'm 5'4'' and he's perfect for me... he ha a nice deep frame and takes the leg well. Don't look that out of place on him :)

Go and have a look at some and see how you feel on them, there are so many out there go try quite a few and see how comfortable you feel .. Im 5ft2 and have a 15.2 tb light build tb mare but I did try out a 16hh medium build and she was too big for me .. Although safe she was just too big really so wasn't ideal, you won't know unless you try and I'm pretty sure that you will be fine with a 16hh they are big horses afteral

My 16.2 ex racer is irish tb so good substance, long legs but not deep through the body, i'm 5'7 & would say we are a good match :) My wb x mare is a very compact/deep 15.3 and my legs dont reach bottom of belly, I think a 'chunkier' person would look better on her......
