my pony has decided he wants to do extended trot all by himself!!! tonight and a few days ago, on the way home from a hack when i've been trotting he has started extending like never before!! he's always keen to get home and speeds up a bit. sometimes if i'm trotting with another horse, mine will try to canter to race. when i pull him back into trot, he throws himself into the most amazing extended trot. he lengthens his neck and pulls a bit harder on the reins, so i give him a bit more length to stretch. i've tried to get him to do it in the school in the past, but he just goes into canter, altho he's done it on the lunge before, one day when he was excited.

how can i let him know that he's doing good when he does it hacking, so i can then hopefully encourage it in the school? i know he's more than capable of it, its just geeing him up enough to get him to do it.

its good that he's not breaking into canter but get the help of a good instructor as there is a massive difference between speeding up and extending. Extended trot should be no quicker than working trot. Good luck working on this:)
