Not nearly as catastrophic as severed flexor tendons.
Most of these are not sutured but left to heal by themselves. The horse will likely have a funny gait for a few weeks but most learn to flick the leg forward. Most will come sound with time.
One of mine severed an extensor tendon (hind). I was told it was a tendon they can live without. Other than the first few days, when she kept knuckling, she has never been lame on it
. That was about 4 years ago now. Maybe it would affect her if we were doing a lot of serious competition work, but for all riding club activities she is fine.
our gelding tore his superficial hind tendon and damaged his annular ligament in the same leg at same time. Superb surgery at Leahurst, a lot of rest and magnetic boots and 2 years later he is back competing working hunter. Just proves they can come back as good as they were.
So glad to have seen this thread, has given me long term hope
My mare severed her hind extensor 3 weeks ago with a cheese-wire cut from electric wire (which is now taken down & discarded I might add)
Horsepital & my vet not too concerned about the tendon which was stitched but the cut wound is proving to be a worry after the stitches not taking
Anyone used manuka honey with success, we are currently using flamazine under huge bandages to support the tendon & wound.
My vet seems quite keen to give it a try
One of YO's foals severed the extensor tendon on one of her hind legs. Horrible injury and she had to be splinted to stop her knuckling over, but vet said the prognosis was excellent.
