How many people get charged extra for having their horses dealt with both of these days?Personally i feel people should pay more...I deal with my own lad on both these days...whatever condition i may be in,lol....xmas day i do as i love to spend a couple hrs with him on my own without family etc :) x

I wouldn't be surprised if I was asked to pay extra if I had some kind of supported livery arrangement (but I don't, I'm DIY)

However, on the other side of the coin, I am a freelance groom, I work on yards. By choice I am not working on Christmas Day but will work other bank holidays and traditional holiday dates without charging extra.

My YO takes 3 days off a year, xmas, boxing and new year day!
We are complete DIY whereas we'd normally get our horses turned out.
But I agree, if your YO is willing to still offer service, you should be willing to pay more as its there xmas etc also. Long as its not sprung on liveries though x

We have diys that like to be full when they have had a skinful etc, lol(assisted diy),just wondered if people charged more over the xmas period :0 x

Yes we normally turn all out,if only they had your attitude,lol...unbelievable some peoples way of thinking :) x

If they have to pay their staff double (or more) time then, unfortunately, someone has to pick up the tab. I guess a lot of liveries would consider themselves lucky at having a yard that provides this on Xmas & NYD.

I am lucky that I live on site now but even before I did, I would always feed/turn out/muck out myself on Christmas Day?

I do ask the YO to bring in for the evening however (I have assisted DIY when required) as I am required to be 1 1/2 hours drive away doing the Christmas thing with my family....

Thats fair enough as i would imagine you have given them plenty of notice :D x

for xmas day boxing day and new yard day our livery is double the normal price but i always do my own! having three i just could afford it but also like to see them at christmas, like said above gives a break from 'family time' which often involves snooring men on the sofas and screaming kids lol

i usually spend a week or so with the folks over christmas, and usually take the horse home too, so that I can do her but if I could not do this then i wouldn't object to paying double considering the time f year. when i did have to put my horse n livery over christmas in the past, i was never charged double

The YO charges double her normal rates for liveries not on already on the Full Livery Service.

I think it's fair enough as most people have the day off as it's a BH so could do it themselves and the YO has a family to look after as well as the horses so she should get paid for working at Xmas and the NY.

I work in an office but I know i would ask my boss for time and a half or even double if i was asked to work!!!

I know that there are doctors and nurses, police etc etc that have to work and don't get extra, before i get jumped on by people who are working over Crimbo!!!

There are a few of us that arrange to do each others horses. I don't have kids so waking up to the excitement of "Has Santa Been" is wasted on me...I'll open my pressies when i get back from the neds!! So i do a couple of peoples horses Crimbo morning and they do mine Crimbo night when they are glad to get out of the house and away from that noisy Xmas present, good old Auntie bought and is now driving them up the wall...

I charge double for assisted livery on Christmas day, Boxing day and New Years Day. Most of my liveries go assisted over Christmas.

George is on part livery, but on Christmas, Boxing and New Years Day we have to do our own which I think is more than fair and we all help out if someone is away one day etc. Also the YO kindly puts in the morning / evening feeds and hay though :)

On Christmas day I usually go up and do my horse and then start on the other boxes. I usually have most of them done before the YO gets out of bed.I think as he does my horse for no extra cost most mornings the least I can do is help out on Christmas day.

Having them done then isn't an option - yo is off! We are totally DIY anyway, and always do them on Christmas day/NYE etc so hasn't been something we have had to sort out. Like someone above said, if the yo employs someone then someone has to pick up the tab for the extra pay. Though if you are usually on part or full then I would expect that to carry on anyway. We are lucky though - Christmas is a family free zone so we spend the day doing the horses and eating!!

Am on full livery so same all year round but when I was on DIY I used to always do my own horse(s) on Christmas Day so can't remember if there was an extra charge if you wanted them done. I have a friend who is on 5 day livery and weekend DIY and I think she is charged £25 if she wants her horse done on Christmas Day.

Our full liveries dont get charger extra. One lady booked in the summer for her horse to go on a full livery for 2weeks so she will be charge normal. This year we have told everyone we are not doing full services only finish off pm if needed and this will be charged a fee. Otherwise its a normal day at the yard.

My mare is on full livery (apart from riding as she is in foal) and my 2 1/2yr old is on grass livery. Grass livery price remains the same (he is fed once a day but i dont have to pay extra for them to that on Christmas Day etc). My livery fee is more on all bank holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and NYD. Im not sure how much more though, i never bother to check as its something that needs to be done so i just let them do it.

Our yard is total DIY but there is a freelance groom who does some livery. She charges double on Christmas Day, Boxing day and New years day which I think is totally reasonable - most people actually give her a few pounds extra as well as they really appreciate not having to come back to the yard after lunch. Most people do them in the morning and leave everything ready for the evening so she just has to bring in.

Hi

I agree if some one has to look after a livery horse at XMAS and New year as their owners are enjoying the festive season the person looking after the horse should be paid extra to do so esp. as they clearly wont be having XMas and new Year off!

I am a diy livery person and the attitude of other liveries at previous yards used to really annoy me. I was on one yard which was a mix of DIY and full iveries where the other owners were solicitors, teachers, a marketing manager and well off house wives (Im not having a go at house wives there are lots who make do magnificantly with bugger all funds). they all moaned like billy oh when the y/o put up the rent by £1 so his staff could have a pay increase of £20 per week before tax. The staff member worked full time 5 days per week and 1/2 saturday and get under £10K which given that she would stay all night with collicy horses was a real sin I thought.

My YO charges x 2.5 normal costs for bringing in, turning out, feeding, rug-changing etc on public holidays but, having said that, she is actually away herself Christmas Day, Boxing Day and NYD so none of us will have to option of "assisted" on those days.
Having any sort of "assistance" is an un-dreamt-of luxury for me anyway as hitherto mine have always been in my own rented fields so I HAD to do them regardless of weather or "holidays"

I do the horses on our yard and charge double on christmas day, boxing day and new years day :). But its totally DIY. When I was on full livery as it is every day I didnt get charged extra and wouldnt expect to.

One of mine is part livery, while the other is on grass. I do them myself on Christmas day and the yard still sorts them out Boxing day and New Years. Its not a big deal the kids love to go up and see the ponies and give them a cuddle and it gets us out in the fresh air.

I will do the normal livery but no extra on these three days. Unless someone is going away and it is booked in advance. I don't charge any more. :)

I am a YO and i increase my fees for extra services for Christmas Day, and New Years. At the end of the day its taking time away from my family time so whilst i dont mind... i need the extra to buy hubby a few cans to keep him from moaning that i am doing other peoples horses on christmas day etc!

Generally we do morning rugs and turn out/fetch in for the DIY's anyway, then the YM charges extra for mucking out (i think £3, then up to £4 is you text after 12 as she prefers to be done in the morning, then £5 if you text after 3 which is when we bed down and fetch in)

But Xmas, boxing and New years day (previously just xmas) she puts it up to £5/6/7 pounds, tho she already has the list up so people can put they're names down. tbh I don't blame her as she nearly always ends up with half the DIY's to do as well as the full liveries and she has a young daughter who she'd much rather spend the day with so she may as well earn a little extra, and none of the liveries mind paying it.

However we nearly always get down to do the boys xmas day to save her a job (not that they take long) or at least my mum does as i've gotta be at work at 9 and don't get time after.
