Now that the shooting season is underway - my two dogs are working hard. When it comes to feeding my horse I have a massive choice of feeds, balancers, supplements, etc but is there the equivalent for dogs?

I am feeding a working dog kibble with a higher protein content but would be interested in trying an extra vitamin and mineral supplement. (Bit like a Sanatogen one a day!!)

I have a very energetic spaniel who is slightly light but not very hungry and a slightly overweight lab who is always hungry!

Don't know about vit/mins but I know a gundog trainer and picker upper who will not go out without a pocket of Mars bars for his dogs; they can be a life saver, especially for a razzy spaniel!

Never give them chocolate, no matter how hard they're worked.

My Uncle feeds his 2 labs (one working one semi retired) a mix of working dog dried food (shall check what sort) and you know the biggg tins of dog meat? Half of those each. Just in the evening. Also a raw egg every now and again to keep their coats in good condition. Neither of them are overweight and keeps them going all day.

I think there is a real gap in the market here for dog supplements when compared to horse foods.

The mars bar is used by lots of working dog owners but I am very wary. Extra rations is no good for the spaniel as he just won't eat anymore and I also shy away from tinned meat considering most of them are 80% water but would perhaps make the meal more appetising for a poor eater.

Really just wanted to give them a boost if it was available.

there are loads out there already ! - go to any large animal feed store and look on their medication section - AMP food s do an excellent working dogs range of raw and minced food - totally natural and specifically aimed at workinng gundogs.

SA37 is also a good bet and will boost your dogs condition if taken regularly but there are lots of others too. Make sure you are feeding a high quality food and PLEASE NO CHOCOLATE

They don't need it providing they are getting a well balanced diet. Our Wolfhound is on a cheap working dog mix and a few spoonfuls of bog standard tinned dog food. He is on Synoquin for joint mobility and that is all. We have tried all the expensive mixes and he doesn't like them. He is in rude health and hunts daily hard (upto 4 hours +) and he is middle aged. He is absolutely fine.

I would never feed any dog I know chocolate in any form (even though mars bars have v.little on it)
Is the spaniel a very fussy eater as well? A little tinned food might just help as I know my shnauzer doesn't like plain dried food but needs to be on it for medical reasons. Is it the sort you can dampen before eating? As a little bit of milk or the dog gravy (it comes in a squirty bottle) might help get he/her to eat?

Does the lab work as well? They always tend to have weight issues if being overfed but underworked.
