Extreme Heat and horses

I usually wouldn’t be concerned but 38, 39, 40 aren’t normal heats and are above normal body temperature so can be problematic. I also find that UK heat is somehow hotter than South African, or even Spanish, heat. I feel like the sky is somehow closer here so it’s more smothering… if that makes any sense!
The only heat I can compare UK heat to is Christmas day in Durban, in a traffic jam, in a car with no air con. When even your sweat is sweating.
I do not miss that ?

That may be it, yes ? although Durban in South Africa is very humid. Although thinking about it, I hated the heat there.

I think that would be as effective as anything else, really. I have seen some people hang wire supermarket basket type baskets filled with big ice blocks too.

Thanks, I have put several bottles in the freezer now, the hose is ready on his door. I know he won't be around forever, but losing him due to a heatwave is not the way I want him to go. He is in great order at the moment, I spotted him chase the cat out of his paddock last night when it got cooler. Fingers crossed I can get him through the next 3 days. Both of us in front of the fan and under the hose I guess !

Where are your swallows? Could you place some 2l coke bottles filled with water and frozen near them?
This is a great plan, I hadn’t thought of this! They are up in the rafter of the feed room. I can hang frozen bottles on the next beam and rig a little fan to blow across them. Hopefully it gives the little mites a fighting chance.

I mistakenly thought you lot were gasping about temperatures in the low 30s. My mistake. I'm still surprised that you are experiencing temperatures of mid to high 30s even though I've known it since glancing at this thread the other day and hearing it on the news.

You all have my sympathy.

It's the 40 degrees tomorrow that's really worrying those of us who are likely to be hit by it. I kept hoping it was scaremongering but our local forecasters are two lads who like following the models and are usually pragmatic - they've said we should be looking at 38+ Mon & Tues

met office says 37/38 here the next 2 days, bbc says 41/41. . .
Im hoping its the former.
It's still above 30 at 10pm
