I'm hoping to sign up to BSJA when I get a new horse but I have no idea if its worth it? I dont get how old you have to be to compete for money and if its worth the entry fees and membership in relative to what you would win? I'm not a beginner at show jumping but I've never considered competing for money afflicted. Also looking at the shows near me they have TYPE C1, C2, and J. What does all this mean? I'm 16 atm but probably wouldn't want to compete seriously until 17-18 with a horse 5-6. I'm willing to put in the effort to try and do well from competing but I have no idea where to start! I'm in South Wales so if anyone knows of where I could go for help that would also be great!

If you're doing it to make profit - i'd probably just say don't...
It's there as a great hobby for some people, but even the very very few who make a living out of being on the SJ circuit, they don't make very much profit from it.

The benefits from being registered are the prize money..........but sometimes there will only be one or two prizes due to entries in the class. The shows are usually well run and a better standard. You don't have to be registered to try as you can buy a ticket on the day which allows you to compete (but you will not be eligible to win prize money). C1, C2 are the type of schedule. I wouldn't be going into this thinking you will make money out of it but if you do well its nice to come home with some back plus your horse will have a permanent record on the BS database of its winnings.

I think it is well worth it if you are competing regularly, prize money is good and you know that the courses are built to a good standard appropriate for the height of the class.

C1 is a category one show.. jumping up to 1m15cm
C2 is a category two show ..jumping to a maximum of 1m40cm
J would be a show for juniors.
Why don't you go to an affiliated show see what they are like. Do you know of anyone who jumps affiliated? They might be able to advice you. There are rules and regulations regarding tack timing etc etc. These are to protect and safeguard both Horse and riders. Good luck.
