The riding school I work at is sadly closing down soon which means a lot of the horses will have to be sold

I am fairly worried about them as have known most of them for years but already most have got homes sorted out which is good

However there is one old horse who we can't decide what to advertise as, he is a lovely natured, about 18 year old IDx, a good weight carrier and very, very laidback (seriously nothing phases him!) I have never known a horse so bombproof, he was a jousting horse when younger so this is probably why. Now he is mainly used for hacking as he doesn't really enjoy school work and is extremely hardwork in the school! But he is lovely out hacking, enthusiastic but safe.

He is sound but as he is getting on in years he wouldn't beable to do heavy work. We have tried contacting RDA centres but most say he's not suitable, either because he isn't responsive enough in the school for the advanced riders, or too big (16.2) to be led easily. So we are kind of at a loss what to do with him. Do you think anyone would want an 18 year old horse that they can only really hack on? And what price do you think? ( The yard owner insists she wants some money from him

) He really is lovely and we all want to find him a good home but are really struggling, has anyone got any ideas?

The short answer to whether anyone would want him: YES! There's definitely a market for older, bombproof happy hackers as older horses are usually: a) calmer and b) cheaper.

As a guide, I paid £600 for a calm 21 yr old happy hacker with slight arthritis, but he'd been out of work for 18 months. Sold him 6 months later for £750, he was a lot fitter by then. You could probs put him up for sale for £995, just to make sure he comes up in the 'Under £1000' sections of sites like Horsemart.

MUST be excellent in traffic. Mainly be used to hack out with our section D, needs to give me (just back into riding after 20years) my confidence back.He will be ridden by a 12 year old so I can not stress enough the need to be SAFE, also be ridden by a very capable 19 year old. Im looking for the perfect man, I know they are difficult to find, but if you''ve got him. we will give him a lovely home. please drop me an email or call my mobile. We sell our carriages horses as bombproof hacks - they all have wait lists. Many older riders, and with us heavier riders (including riders husbands) like them. Our horses work in the city for about 4 years, and will not even look at a firetruck race 3 feet next to them with lights and sirens. All our horses have great homes, and we sell them for good money!

Thankyou everyone, I am more hopeful now!
He lives in Surrey at the moment and is perfect in traffic. Gabby8tIa, are those recent adverts? And where did you find them?

If I had the time and cash I would be snapping your hand off for him(esp if he was a pally

), sounds a real gent.

There is definatly a market for older been there, done that horses esp the bigger ones.
He would be perfect for someone like me(worked at an RS in teens, had a long break for a baby and lacking confidence ATM).Good luck, sure he will find a wonderfull home.

I bought an 18 year old some years ago as a schoolmaster and teacher for my highland baby. I paid £800 and he came with a lovatt and ricketts saddle. The best money I ever spent. Absolutely bombproof and such a fun horse. I just wish I could find and fund another like him. BTW the saddle sold for £400 so he was an incredible bargain.

I have been loaned a 27 year old 16 hand mare and I am 14.5 stone in weight. She is simply fabulous to gently hack out and is a real confidence builder. I love her to bits. It would appear that the 18 year old is a relative youngster!
