I would be grateful for any info / experiences of eye cancer in ponies. Daughter's pony has a pink raised area on the sclera (white part). It came up very suddenly and the vet doesn't know what it is but has mentioned squamous cell carcinoma. He is getting it looked at again tomorrow and possibly a biopsy. It doesn't appear painful and it also lookd slightly different all the time. It's only on the outer aspect. The sclera looks almost thickened and there is a raised line running vertically next to the iris. Very odd and worrying!

Would like to thank the senders of the private messages received. They have been most helpful during this alarming time. I will post an update once our wee man has been seen tomorrow. Our vets are great, they are equine specialists.

Oh I'm waiting for the vet today as my daughters retired 30 yr old pony developed the same thing about 3 weeks ago looks suspiciously like cancer to me so any info passed on would be great and wait to see what the vet says :(

Our old Clydesdale developed it at 8 and he lived to 22. It did come back despite chemo and radiotherapy and we accepted that every 3 years or so we needed to pay £2,000 odd for surgery and radiotherapy. He did loose one eye - nowdays he probably would not have. It was decided kinder to remove the eye rather than keep operating on it.

We could have as he got older kept having the growth trimmed, but decided to go for removal and radiotherapy in case it did spread.

I have our new Clydie mare checked annually as I know of several sabino Clydes that have eye cancer.

If you look under the vet section on here with the sticky for photos, there is a picture of the cancer on his eye.

I hope your pony is ok.

Sorry to barge in on thread again, but ponys seen vet tonight 99% sure she has a squamous cell carcinoma of the eye ( the bad sort of cancer) so on steroid drops for a few days while we decide what to do next :( biopsy taken and sent to lab to confirm
Difficult decisions to be made as dear old pony will be thirty in June so trying to make the best decision for the old girl x :(:(:(:(:(

My dog had cancer in her eye as a puppy and had the eye lasers three times which successfully removed the cancerous part. She was referred to the Eye Vet Clinic in Leominster, Herefordshire who also treat horses.
I'm sorry to hear about your horse but can definitely recommend a referral to the vets I used. They were unsure how successful the lasering would be but she hasn't had any reoccurrence in 6 years.
Good luck.

Hobgoblin sorry to hear about your news, thanks to all who have replied, I don't feel on my own quite so much! Pony's eye much less inflamed as of this evening, and the jelly like substance which was hovering over the sclera has gone, though this may have been the fucidin cream I have been given to use by the vet. Will update tomorow after visit to vet.

Have been to the vets and biopsy taken. Vet fairly sure it is squamous cell carcinoma, but very early stage so treatable with chemotherapy etc.

We had a pony with a growth in her eye It was removed under local anathestic and was quite OK and kept going on as a hunter and pony club pony. Sadly she developed a tumor in her neck at aged 15 and had to PTS>
