its a sign of dominance or challenge i think.

Dominance. When I lunge my arab, to get a downward transition all i have to do is look away at the floor. To get upward, look directly at him. Monty Roberts does a similar thing with a roundpen, but I only discvered how well it worked when lunging in a baseball cap! Break the eye contact he slows down immediately.

I often ask George to stand still in the arena and I walk away keeping eye contact and he stands still, when I drop my eyes and relax he comes towards me for a pat.

well i dont know, im usually fussing around her body handling and brushing her but when i come to one of the TB's heads and look at her in the eye and hold her round the head she just looks right back and nudges me with her muzzle as if to say 'what the hell do yah thing your looking at mush?'
but i have noticed that when i go to fill the haynets up on the yard i usually ignore the unhalter broken colts which share the yard as i fill the nets and they usually get closer and are a bit curious and if i looked up and looked at one in the eye they usually snort and back up.
