Horse has had an eye enucleation, the socket has some dry skin and grease in it.

What do you clean it as the eye still tries to close when i try to wipe it and I don't want to hurt them.

Not horses but when I was a district nurse many years ago we just used to clean eye sockets with saline, (mild salt water solution) you could probably put a small amount of vaseline on the dry skin afterwards if it is a problem just till it comes off then just continue with saline after that, your vet should be able to advise.

I used to use warm water with a little baby oil or bio oil, or warm water with a little salt. On a nice big wad of cotton wool.

My horse still blinked when I touched his eye socket 3 years after the removal so I'd say just crack on!

Maybe a bit grim but mine just loved it being rubbed off with my fingers. It’s the sort of grease that balls up and comes off with a good rub.
If anyone had told me years ago I’d ever have done or written this is have probably been sick ?
A good eye socket rub was like heaven for my horse! The lip would start going and everything.
I’d not worry too much about hurting it, (presuming as it’s greasy it’s well healed and not a recent removal of course)
