Eye opp

My old pony had his whole eye removed! I was really worried too, as they said there is a nerve behind the eye that could stop the heart (dont worry this is only involved when the remove the eye i think) He was fine thought! Dont worry too much about all the scarey stuff they tell you. They have to tell you the worse that could happen, that really worried me, but its v unlikely to happen! A year later he had to have a 2nd op, which went well aswell, as it hadn't healed very well the first time as it was so bad before the first op! dont worry im sure ur horse will be fine! it was a massive shock turning up to see my beautiful pony with massive stitches hanging out his eye socket though!!

My mare had both third eyelids removed at AHT due to squamous cell carcinoma. She was there for a few days, had op then came home. I had some stuff to put in her eyes then just carries on. All went fine, no probs. Am sure yours will be too. They also tell you the worse case scenario just in case, as problems can happen, but rarely do..

At the ripe old age of 19, Sunny had his eye removed. It's called enucleation. GA was a worry but the wonderful staff at Bushey House put my mind at rest when they explained it's a relatively short op and they expected Sunny to sail through it. He was only in 5 days and on the 7th day after the surgery he was allowed half an hour in the outdoor school. He shot round, bucking and farting and loose schooled himself over the jumps twice. Happiest he'd been for the 6 months of the battle we had to try to save the eye. Your horse will be fine. If his eyesight is affected, you will need to be his "missing" sight for a bit while he adjusts, but honestly, even though he now only has 1 eye Sunny is still a happy hacker, still does the occasional local dressage competition, has free range privileges round the yard and is the safest horse anyone has ever met. Horses adjust amazingly well, you'll be amazed. Keep on adoring him and never, ever feel sorry for him and don't let anyone else either! xxx

Thanks guys thats made me feel a bit more hopefull, I compete him at BE 100 at the moment, was fence judging today at a BE event and some one said there is a horse that events BE at quite a high level, so fingers crossed
