George the terrierist is screwing up one eye this evening, I’ve had a look and can’t see anything particularly but obviously it is sore for him ☹️ he was 100% fine on the walk at 3.30pm so I think it will be something like being flicked in the eye accidentally by a greyhound tail?? Is there anything I can put on it as a soother, or should I leave well alone?

Vets is not an option this evening due to post-run event wine intake for me 😳

No, I haven’t got any Optrex ☹️ I should have something in really as a contact lens wearer!

Thanks, I’ll try some cold tea

Cold tea (no milk!) is a good thing to soothe. Mine is prone to sticking her face in things she shouldn’t and getting ulcers. I’d give it 24 hours to settle if it’s not too painful.

Its worth getting some eye saline wash from Boots as a standby, its cheap enough and can be used for wounds as well ( obvs not for eyes after though!)

I should have some in Paisley for contact lens problems! I’ll definitely get some tomorrow.... I’ve bathed George’s eye and he seems supremely indifferent thankfully!

Nothing useful to add but sending healing vibes for the little dude! Greyhound probably got sick of his yapping and gave him a flick of the tail to tell him to shurrup ;)
Seriously though, hope nothing too bad and he's all better by tomorrow.

Not that the whippet has his own medical box. Or a travel one in a roll up bag I made with Sophie Allport material of skinny dogs.

Active Silver products are very good, I have used a few of them, they have one for eyes, Magic Eye Drops, though not had the need to use these, probably worth trying. Very good reviews for their products.

I know this will be frowned upon but any sign of an eye infection (closing the eye is indicative of pain) but especially with discharge, I use Chloramphenicol drops (available over the counter) but DO NOT mention it’s for your dog! Make up some BS about your partner having an eye infection and yes, he/she (whatever your preferences) has used it before!

That’s a great idea, I’ll do that! His eye is fine now but I’d rather be organised for next time

Dont self medicate eyes- and dont lie to pharmacists- there is a reason why they will decline to prescribe for certain problems. Don't complain when antibiotics dont work..

Oh please, don’t concern yourself about a dog owner asking for OTC medication. It’s the doctors prescribing prescription only antibiotics to demanding patients who have the sniffles that’s the problem.

Oh yes, definitely the doctors fault, not the random person lying to trained professionals and using the wrong medication or randomly starting stopping it....

OTC Chloramphenicol has not increased resistance to gram positive bacterium. I thought it was common knowledge that the over prescribing of oral antibiotics was the cause of MRSA and other superbugs?

I am not one to dash to vets, but the only exception I would make is with eyes. Monitor for 24 hours yes but I wouldn't administer anything other than bathing with cold tea. I had a gsd bitch who one sunday morning had a closed and weeping eye which was obviously very sore so took her to vet, long story short, within 24 hours she had the eye removed as there was a tumour behind it which was pressing on it.
