Eye Ulcer scarring

My horse has recovered from an eye ulcer and has been left with a small amount of scarring in the corner of his eye, the vet said it could take months to clear / heal. Does anyone have experience of this and how long did the scarring take to go.
 
Depending on how deep the ulcer was, the scaring may not necessarily completely go. It should improve over next few weeks, but may be left with a small (pinpoint) white spot permenantly. Nothing to worry about if it does as not affecting vision in corner of eye.

What caused the ulcer in the 1st place LHS? If it was an injury eg sticking his head in a bramble bush in the field then as s_b says, it might always stay as a little milky dot. It might still clear completely though coz, as vets have advised, eye injuries take ages to heal as the cornea has no blood supply. If it is still healing, it's important to keep the eye "sparkling clean" if you know what I mean! I'd do careful daily wipes and maybe soak a clean cloth in sterile water and squeeze this over the eye from above if it looks a bit gungy at all.

However, if the ulcer was because of some other cause you may need to watch the scarring very, very carefully in case it is a more serious process that is still going on.
 
My horse had an eye ulcer approx 2 years ago and still has a grey triangle scar in her eye. For a few months afterwards there was what looked like a tiny blood vessel going to the area presumeably healing it but once that went away then the healing was over and the scar remained. Not sure if it really effects her vision though.
 
Totally agree with BOF................my mare got recurrent corneal ulcers, with resultant 'scarring'. Turns out that the 'scarring was actually a squamous cell carcinoma which was destroying the surface of the eye as it grew - thus causing the ulcers. She's had cheme, radiotherapy and surgery to sort it out and must wear a flymask all the time whenever she's out to protect the eye from the wind - it's sensitive.

Take pics of the scar on a regular basis so that you have a comparison and 'keep an eye' on it.
 
Thank you everyone, the vet treated his ulcer about 6 weeks ago and said she didn't need to come back unless I was concerned but that this small bit of scarring would possibly take months to go. I keep an eye on it but am obviously a layman so a bit nervous.

We think he did it by banging his head on the oak beam going into the stable as he is a tosser and rears up cos he doesn't want to go in, but it could just as easily have been a bramble bush we just don't know.

The scarry bit doesn't seem any bigger and his vision seems fine.
 
Zulu - that tiny blood vessel was something called neovascularisation. It's when the cornea tries to heal itself by growing a brand new little blood vessel ACROSS the cornea to bring white blood cells to fight the infection. Brilliant eh? When it's no longer needed the new blood vessels shrink away again. Sunny's eye tried to heal itself like that and a huge patch of blood vessels grew but it was too huge an infection, going deep into his eye, for it to heal itself.

LHS - sounds a straightforward case thank god. Give your little tosser a carrot from the Forum lol xxx
