our section A started squinting his right eye at the beginning of this summer and eventually we took him 2 the vets n they said it was an ulcer, gave us some medication and its cleared up now but apparently the sun made his eye sensitive. will it affect him nxt summer, and if so how can we shade his eye? he doesnt like being in all day and out at night as this is wat we had 2 do previously.

My horse has moon blindness in one eye, which may be similar to what your horse has. He cant go out in bright sun, if he does, I just always make sure he has a UV flymask on.

There was a horse at my old yard that had this problem I think and it re occurred (or never healed properly) through out the summer. She was kept in a dark stable and as she rubbed her eye they put a rubber sausage boot over her eye area and attached to her headcollar to prevent her rubbing it. The good news is that the following year she was absolutely fine.

Does your horse have Uveitis? It sounds like it. Very very painful condition for horses to have to live with and it generally recurs.

Have known horses with this problem.A couple of owners used a special type of mask apparently ordered from America, think it was through vet and think they were quite expensive but if you can get it through vet, insurance could cover it if you are going through them. The mask fits over face like a normal one but had removable bits round they eye,was like big raised circled bits were attached by velcro. One owner used this so good eye remained uncovered ,sensitive eye was covered.Really wierd looking things, looked like big bug eyes but seemed to work and enabled the horses to go out during day.

i have a horse with uv - moonblindness had since a foal now only 20% sighted as has afffected both eyes

its a painful condition needs to be monitored

horse has to have a mask in the summer -- not a fly fringe

remeber its not just the sun that sets it off its wind
and extreme cold -- so if cold and eyes are running bring him in

same to as th sun

its a very painful condidtion needs bute for pain if eyes are puffy and swollen along with running tears

needs to betreated inside the eyes to
i have steriods bute and antibotics
as my horse has it serverely -- the proper terminlogy i have listed so you can ask the vet

equine recurrent uveitis- moonblindness - periodic ophthalmia
its a disease of the eyes

and will always be there once it starts
