Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could help. On Saturday I noticed that my mare's left eye looked extremely dry on her eyelid and that she had been rubbing it as she had sores above and below her eye. She was reluctant to let me touch it but I did, however, manage to put some Sudocrem on it to help soothe it. There's no discharge or swelling and I have put a call in to the vet (waiting to hear) but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or something similar...

For gods sake don't put sudocreme in her eye or close enough that it can bleed back into the eye. You could bathe it very gently in plain boiled and cooled water but to be honest eyes are so precious that if it was still the same after a day or two then I'd get the vet out. She could have scratched her eye or her eyelid or there could still be a foreign body in it. Scratches or injury to the cornea can be a swine to heal because the eye has no blood supply. The vets would add a dye to the eye that stains any damaged area so you would know if the horse would need antibx. Fingers crossed it's just a knock in which case a day or two should see it back to normal.

If its a foreign body the eye would be red, sore, watery. If her 3rd eyelid (the bit in the corner of her eye) is a bright red, then this would be course for concern. However if shes rubbing it, it could be shes been annoyed by flies and a simple fly mask will solve the problem. Saline solution and vaseline is the best. My boys face/eyelids are covered in rubs at the moment as he had an allergic reaction to something so rubbed himself raw!

Thank you for your replies, really appreciated...
Don't worry, the Sudocrem was near her eye but certainly not near enough to actually enter it.
Her actual eye itself is ok, its just the surrounding skin. Anyway, Ive put a call in to the vets and he's told me to bathe her face in Malaseb Shampoo for a week and see what happens. I've also booked an appointment for a visit next week...
