Feathers!!!!! & dont i know it!!

I'm really worried about my new cob - he keeps stamping his back feet & shows all the signs of mites but as i've read on could also be mange or CPL!! ..... i've trimmed his feathers as he is desperatly stamping his feet & treated him for mites & lice but he also has crustations of skin etc - should i clip his feathers so i can see whats going on under there?? he is chewing his legs & rubbing them on anything he can find & the area feels really lumpy too - he also seems to have sweet itch & is really rubbing his mane & tail i have treated twice with Switch & thought there would be an improvment by now or at least some relief - itassumed it would work with it being so expensive!! - what should my plan of action be tomorrow??

i hate thinking somthing is irritating him

this is my first cob - i have had him 3 weeks & have no experience of feathers & hairy lads :):):)

any advice on what i need to buy & do to make his summer less miserable  he has never had much grooming one to one etc & he's 15.. so anything he has had he could have had for many years, i want to nip it in the bud if at all possible!!

so far i've used mange shampoo & pig oil for the mites - but its hard to get it even near skin with his brushes lol!!!

gladly accept any advice or experience x

For my hairy I use Ruggles Stop-It-All :) fab stuff and couldn't recommend it more for mites, it sorts out loads of different skin conditions/bites ect. I also know many others that use it for mites and sweet itch too, also exellent fly repellant!! Xx

i am googling it as we speak Gypsy thank you ((hug)) xx

I had a hairy cob with mites in his feathers. I was advised to use frontline spray (readily available for cats and dogs at petshops) but that was a few years ago know so there 'mite' be something better out there!
Sorry I couldn't help myself.

I know how frustrating it is though. Seeing them so uncomfortable.

I see that you have already tried some treatments - I was advised that if I was really struggling to get to his skin that I would have to consider clipping... which is sadly the option that we had to take. They did clear up within a few after that but he was no longer suitable for the show ring as I refused to hog his mane! (Bottom left in signature)

I would be interested as to what everyone else advises...?

Congratulations on your new horse too Songbird :) i do love a hairy cob!

Clip them! Best way to see whats going on. Unless you want to show him as a traditional cob this year then there no harm clipping his feathers off.

I thoroughly recommend speaking to your vet about the Dectomax injection. My fell had scabby legs and was chewing his legs and stamping his back feet really badly. I tried loads of things but the dectomax injection worked brilliantly - he had to have 2 injections 10 days apart. Since then I painted his legs with pig oil and sulpher weekly for about 6-8 weeks and also put cream on the backs of his knees where he had some particularly bad scabs.

His legs are now pretty much scab free, he's stopped itching and I havent had to chop his feathers off (vet was very understanding on that score!).

:D

If he is bad/uncomfortable (sounds like when my boy got them) get vet out for dectomax. He had 1x injection to kill the mites off didnt even need the 2nd. Then had to clip off and wash with soothing shampoo as his skin was also crusty. then frontline spray them regularly to prevent the return...you can do the spray once they grow back just have to brish feathers out of the way before you spray.

We used to have a Fell pony with hairy legs, every day I used a plastic. curry comb and give her ergots and heels a good scrub, she absolutely LOVED it, I would then rub benz benzoate on. Even though it is not available to buy from s chemist I heard that a vet can get it for you, great stuff and really takes the itchiness away

Frontline, dectomax, pig oil and sulphur, ruggles try them all until you find what works. you need to section the hair and get anything you are using topically onto the skin. It is worth it.

Congratulations on joining the hairy club :)

You guys are so cool - i think i'll call the vet & get a jab to cover it & then prevent with frontline - i think i am going to clip his feathers as i have no intention to show this year & i really do want to get familiar with his legs so in the long run worth doing i think.....i think that lymphnoid thing is a worry though  - in many ways the internet gives me sleepless nights!!!! lol - i'm reading no more!!!:D

thank you for your answers & encouragment ...i love the hairy club..... i just dont know what to do with it exactly lol!!!!:)

Sweet Relief is the best cream for mites or mud fever - does both. We all use it at our yard - cobs and ponies alike.
