Been announced by Debby Reynolds live on Sky at midnight. Suspected case now in Dorking, Surrey. It's some distance (think they said about 8kms) outside of the current 10km surveillance zone around Pirbright too.

Duncan and I only said last night that we were concerned as to whether it was too early to relax the movement restrictions allowing livestock to go directly to slaughter. Totally understand that farmers need to sell stock, but it would've been prudent to wait a bit longer really.

Getting really anxious about this. The 1967 strain was known to be extremely adept at airborne transmission.

They insist the risk is low when the animals are being transported direct to slaughter. I concede that animals aren't being moved to graze next to other animals all over the country. However, if the disease is as highly contagious as we're being led to believe then surely there's still a significant danger when live animals are driven past neighbouring farm land on their way to slaughter? Slaughter houses often being a fair old distance from the farm in some instances too.

Oh no.

I am also not keen on the idea of lifting the ban on movement, especially when we are seeing it now jump 10 miles up the road.

Just heard on the news that the farmer involved in this latest suspected case has said vets have told him it is unlikely that the animals involved have F&M - but they are waiting for latest tests to be 100% sure.

I really, really pray that it is not - very worrying if it has spread outside the original zones

First results havecome back negative, 2nd lot of tests due back within an hour or so.

My uncle knows the farmer and he said on the phone that he KNEW that they didn't have FMD. 3 of his calves were drooling, knew they just had a bug BUT had it tested just in case, as he'd never have forgiven himself if it had been FMD.

Don't forget the press love this! Love the hype and 'OMG its spreading'.

The national movement ban being lifted is not premature but sensible.
We do have to live and without animals going to abattoir there is no income.
They are all slaughtered under usual veterinary supervision so anything suspect would be picked up and dealt with accordingly
