Well where else would the leak have come from (in terms of labs) if not from the one making a vaccine? No other labs in this country work on this virus as far as I know. The last recorded case of smallpox in this country came from a lab that had small stocks of the virus in case future vaccines were needed - was that a government conspiracy as well?
 
Not suggesting a government conspiracy but a commercial one, the vaccine is produced by a commercial company, which then gets to sell it's vaccine, once the disease is in the community.

I'm a little confused as to what's happened. If not some kind of conspiracy, then why all the sleeper ordering before the last outbreak? A sign the Goverment KNEW it was going to happen?

My gut feeling says HUGE cock up, but I can't help but wonder.

I know..... but scientists are a little notorious in tinkering. A few years ago we heard that a form of totally resistant bacteria was "acidentally" created, and the staff forgot about it and left it sitting open on a lab bench, rather than sealed and secure.

Unfortunatly, there are lab staff who do not have the common sense of an ant and while they are supposed to be creating the vaccine to prevent it, can cause other issues, such as this FMD which is a "previously unseen strain.

lets just hope that this is the only farm affected and that the whole industry is not brought to its knees again. My heart goes out to the farmer who has been affected this time
 
Not only that Claire, but a couple of months prior to the last outbreak, I was flying to the States a fair amount. The US Customs and Immigration knew about the UK having FMD then because they mentioned it to us! We knew nothing about it until a couple of months later. BIG coverup last time, so possibly no different this time...
 
This 'previously unseen strain' is one which has not been found to cause disease in this country before. It is a reference strain though, not some mutant created by scientists in the lab for fun.
 
Hmm, interesting all this. Just occured to me that if two fanatical doctors can end up working in the NHS, what's to say terrorists manage to get jobs in labs too?

Their efforts at germ warfare may have been more devious than we give them credit for, after all it's an easy way to bring the country to a standstill and financial damge to thousands.......
 
Oh good - more conspiracy theories. I think if you were going to do this there are better bugs to choose - ones that are easier to pass off as a natural outbreak. I would also think you would choose an endemic strain rather than a strain that links back directly to your lab

I love a good conspiracy but some of these theories are hilarious in the extreme.

If there is actual evidence of the Government having planned, executed and covered up the outbreak in 2001 why has no one ever come out and proved it? Hearsay, rumour and chinese whispers are not conclusive proof. I mean what was the motive? To build on the countryside - well that's why we have the most proscriptive planning laws in the entire EU. To keep the countryside pretty? I don't even get that one...

I know someone who knows some farmers who were purposely infecting their livestock with FMD in 2001 so they could claim the insurance as it was more profitable to them than keeping the animals and selling them later for meat. That's total, absolute fact as I heard it from a friend who had it on good authority from Farmer Palmer.

I think all these conspiracy theories give our government and government agents too much credit. It's not conspiracy but incompetence that is to blame for 99% of things that go wrong. And no doubt the same will be seen here - an accidental leak of this strain of FMD to the affected farm.
