We have the same system on our yard. I.e if you book it, you get it. Most people will share but some won't.
Quite often infact no one will book it and will just be run on a first-come first serve basis. Personally I think it works okay.
No one is allowed to book it for over 45 minutes, or if they share they may book it for an hour. You can't have sole rights to the school if lunging as 2 people could lunge in there quite comfortably. You're also not allowed to block-book the same time all week.
Works okay
Frustrating if you're hoping for a lucky chance to get in there and its booked, but its proved vital with my nappy-in-the-school horse.
I am so glad that I don't have to book the School in the yard next to me any longer, as the same things used to happen there on occasions and it was so frustrating
... I was so tempted to change the title back BE's
I've had mixed experiences of school booking over the last few years, one yard I was at was a nightmare to get in the school as it was always booked and people never seemed to hack out there. My current yard is ace, we book the school if we have a lesson/saddle fitting/want to get the jumps out etc but the rest of the time it is a free for all and most will share. Everyone seems to be really flexible and in the year I've been there I have never had a problem. But then it is a brilliant yard where even though most people ride every day we all seem to just fit in with each other and there is hardly any bitching. We all help each other and there is always someone about to help turnout or get in. Most owners are quite experienced and have some sort of goal in their horse owning and this makes a massive difference. The worst yards tend to be the pony patting ones where everyone has nothing better to do than bitch about each other.
Don't even get me started on it!! this morning ours was booked up solidfrom 9.30am so I got down there early to get in there aboiut 8.30am to loose school my boy... I left the yard at 12 noon and not one person had gone in the school after me!!!
Anyway OP, another yard I was at had a limit on the number of times you could book the school during peak times during the week to avoid this... I think it was a maximum of an hour (to accomodate lessons) I think that if your horse is that difficult that you aren't able to school it with others in the school you should be prepared to go down outside peak times to do it... otherwise everybody should be able and willing to share the school unless for a lesson but even then it aint rocket science!!
well its only me and YO there so it not big deal if the whole 2 of us want to ride at the same time. which over the last 3 years has happened about 3 times!
i think its reasonable to book for veiwing to sell or lessons.....
It used to be mainly full liveries and a couple of DIYers, now it is all DIYers bar 2 horses. Then there are the YOs 4 youngsters and if the girl she pays to ride them is schooling we cannot get in school, so that is between 9 and 12 prob 3 days a week
Then the after schoolers, especially one girl, block books, 3.45 - 4.30. Now, I lunch my horse at 12 and he gets tea at 4.30...so you see my predicament! I don't want to have to ride between 12 and 3, that is my *home time* It is getting beyond a joke now - I am happy to flatwork share, others feel they need the arena to themselves (why?!). OK if you are jumping, no more than 2 in the school, but seriously, I am an adult, I can school my horse around another person.
Rant over, sorry! If lessons are booked then no one else can go in school, have no prob with that
I am feeling very lucky about my yard after reading some of this. At my yard you can book the school for a lesson but apart from that its a free for all. We tend to share it out between us but pretty much everyone is happy to share even when jumping, there is only one who is not.
I have to say that I Like Weezy I dont really understand why you wouldnt want to share- surely if you're capable of schooling you're capable of steering round others? what happens when these people go competing- round me you are lucky if the usually very small warm up area is not crammed full of horses- do they remove everyone else from the warm up?
Yeah I never understand people who aren't happy to share when schooling - I am always happy to share, whatever I'm doing - makes life more fun to have people to bounce off (not literally!) !!
We are allowed to book for lessons even tho that has caused probs in past.Daughter had jumping lesson (needed full course)but other livery still moaned cause she needed to jump cos they were jumping next night.Instructor left some jumps and said they could use that.Still not a happy livery.
Don't think people should be allowed to book school for usual everyday riding.Thats just usually a whenever job.
I will not go into a school if someone is having a lesson(jumping or flatwork) as I just feel rude plus find that the people that want to ride in school during your lesson will have a moan if you ride in theirs.
At my yard there is a 60x40 outdoor and a booking system for it but only half the arena can be booked between 4-7pm weekdays as that is when most people ride. Majority of people only book half the arena whenever they have a lesson anyway as its a big enough arena.
We didnt have a booking system however if you were having a lesson or were going to jump, you had to write it in the diary. This was for both Full and DIYers and it worked very well. And usually if someone was having a flat lesson they would quite happily let you go to the other end of the arena aslong as you kept out of their way, again this worked well
Think it depends on the yard size and the people on it aswell. It can just take one uncooperative person to cause trouble for all.
We have to book, obviously if its empty you just go in, but if your using it and someone is waiting we are only alowed half an hour. Cant book it for more than an hour at any time. She doesnt like novices to share it either.
I rode a horse on a yard for a friend and it worked really well.
Up to three people could book into the school at any one time in one hour blocks. If people were wanting to lunge or have a jump lesson then they would write it in the diary and others tended to avoid those times. It cetc ould be booked privately during the day and occasionally it was hired to outsiders for the day but was free from 5pm for liveries. The trouble occurs when you get people abusing the system.

Yea me too, sometimes do swopsy and get to ride a different horse
We have a booking system but there are rules!
You can book the school for a maximum of 1hr a week which is normally for lessons, saddle fittings etc. The rest of the time we all share and it works really well.
There are some reasons that people are reluctant to share, I used to ride a deamon welsh section D who had a nasaty habit of spooking and broncing and was generally a pain in the bum. I daren't share with anyone as I didn't trust him and didnt want to risk winding up anyone elses horse or generally being a danger to others! Saying that the yard had a good booking system, I tried to stay out of the way and was never on the flipping thing for more than half an hour!
We have one but not that many liveries want to use the school at the same times of day so it works ok most of the time. Also, most people are happy to share and if you want to book it by yourself you can write in the book that you want it by yourself. It does annoy me though how some people book the school by themselves and then don't bother to come up and use it... then you end up missing out on a gap when the school is free and you could be using it!
