I am writing to express my total disgust in the horse meat topic in tonight’s F word program. I cannot believe that channel four had the nerve to broadcast such an upsetting topic. In the show Channel Four had Janet street Porter go to France and choose a horse to eat. She then had it sent back to England and cooked and fed it to people. This program and topic made me physically sick. I am so upset. I don’t understand why they had to this, and is next week going to be dog or cat? As a horse lover and owner I cant not say something. Please please please lets all stop this madness send a complaint to channel four. Channel four should be ashamed!!!

Why should they be ashamed? Those horses looked pretty happy, healthy and well cared for to me. Rather than than being sent from salering to salering with ignorant owners. If you feel this way, then I presume you don't eat any meat at all.

Go and look at the thoughts in the soapbox. I for one think it would be a step forward for horse welfare in this country.

Don't know what your problem is. Are you a vegetarian? I personally would rather eat a healthy free range horse, than a barn kept pig (the horse obviously had a better standard of life than other, more intensively farmed animals). Provided the animal is humanly kept, transported and slaughter...where's the problem?

It may in deed be sick but it is a dish served world wise. Yes, perhaps Channel 4 were tactless in how they broadcasted such a subject but i personally believe that it is how media works - you will find hundreds intrigued by what was reported. I am vegetarian and a horse-owner but i have NO problems with the media focussing on the production of such cuisine. Understand that each country has it's own morals, beliefs and cultures - Channel 4 portrayed some of this

I used my freedom of choice to not watch it. It is fact that it happens whether it makes us comfortable or uncomfortable to see. They can broadcast what they like TBH. It was no secret that this was the topic this week, and as I don't cope well with this sort of thing, I chose not to view.

I don't see why they should be ashamed for showing someone cooking and eating meat. This happens on just about every cookery show on television, though usually with a lot less thought as to where the meat came from.

As I said over in Soapbox I don't see anything wrong with what was shown in the F Word. Being a meat eater I don't have a problem eating horsemeat... what is important in meat production is the way animals are kept and slaughtered not what species the animal is. If only people showed more concern about factory/intensive farming particularly broiler chicken production, which is one of the most hateful farming methods around.

Of course they should get away with it, no different to eating a cow. It is up to you how you feel about horsemeat but quite a few people may think the same about cows which you may not. Why should they be ashamed of what they are showing?
There is a thread in SB with a lot of opinions on it.

I didn't watch it, but don't have a problem with it at all. I think there should be more abattoirs, that horses should travel a minimum distance to be dispatched, and that it is very healthy meat. If horse meat was more widely available in this country I would probably eat it, and I am sure I have eaten it in France.

The problem is that in this country we tend not to think of horses as food. I am a vegetarian and ,therefore, against eating any animal meat. However, I would not for one moment try to lecture meat eaters. The problem I have with the idea of eating horse flesh is this- throughout history, through all the great conquests, explorations and expeditions to far off lands, two animals have been right there alongside man during all those adventures-the horse and the dog. We have domesticated both these species to a much greater extent than any other animals. We have altered these species to suit our particular requirements and to do specific tasks. Other species of animals commonly eaten by man have been left mostly alone, apart from some fine tuning. So, I personally find the thought of anyone eating either a dog or a horse quite abhorrent. Just my thoughts.

I have no problem with ANY meat that is ethically produced and slaughtered. I do feel that no animal should travel more than 50 miles from it's farm of origin or fattening befor it is slaightered and that carcasses should then be transported. I have much more problem with eating fish as I have yet to see an ethical manner of capture and slaughter.

What happened when supplys ran short during these great conquests, explorations and expeditions to far off lands..............Oh yes, they ate the horse!!

tremorfa, while the human race has been using horses and dogs for several thousand years I don't think that is long enough in the life of a species to make any real changes, and I doubt if the changes to equines are any more impactive than changes in cattle for example.

You are trying to rationalise sentimentality..you can be as sentimental about animals as you like and I respect anybody's choice not to eat meat..but be honest with yourself about your motives.

The point I was trying to make was that we have changed horses much more dramatically then other species- look at the difference between falabellas and Percherons! Chihuahuas and Great Danes. We have done this deliberately for our own needs and, in some cases, for aesthetic reasons. Of course, when the chips were down and food ran out, the horses would have been eaten. I'm not being sentimental about eating animals, my OH is a confirmed carnivore. I prepare and cook meat for him every day. I just choose not to eat animals. I did stress that these were my thoughts.

That is entirely different and not the subject matter here which was a horse being slaughtered for the purpose of tv and a tv delicacy.
Eating horsemeat as a method of survival -and I feel the same about the slaughter of whales, dolphins etc- is totally different and is acceptable imo if it is only one of a few options of animal protein for people in dire need.
However when there are thousands upon thousands of animals slaughted day in day out and their carcasses left to rot, rendered down or turned into animal feed makes me sick.
All in the name of food and gluttony!
It's the same with these people that go into restaurants and leave half the food on their plates it really pisses me off.
Especially if it was meat.
That piece of steak, chicken etc was an animal slaughtered for food.
Yes fine if all the carcass is used and eaten and used as a sustenance for people. But most is not is it?
Take a look in the bins outside restaurants.
The meat waste bins outside butchers.....
Animals killed for food, their meat not being used. Left to rot or worse still fed back to animals.

Don't get me wrong I am not a vegetarian. I used to be when I was younger for a few years. But yes I will happily eat meat.

To compare horses that were killed during a time of need and short supply as a method of survival, to horses being killed today for meat in the gluttony of the west is just ridiculous!

I suppose everyone will have their own opinions on the subject.
We are all different and some more of a animal lover than another. I suppose the same could be said of horses too.
Maybe we all should have the ideology when he climb aboard our nags that we are essentially just riding a carcass on legs. Something for our pleasure and exploitation and not that we are in the company of and have the privilege of owning and bonding with one of nature's most beautiful creatures. Perhaps then some of us would not have a conscience!

I WAS merely making the point that horses and dogs occupy a different place in our lives from other species commonly eaten. We can all justify our actions if we really want to. I just don't see how people can ride their horses and then go home and eat one.

PMSL - and you accuse others of going 'off the point'!!!

No the horse was slaughter for meat, a small part of the carcass was then shipped to England to be cook on T.V.

Whales/dolphins aren't reared/farmed for meat, they are wild creatures, thus entirely different.

Well if you boil down that facts......we are. However I think you'll find that most horse owner in the U.K. (myself included) have signed the bit in the back of their horses passport, that means the horse can't go for human consumption.

Why?

a) If my horse needs medication, I want it to be able to have, which ever will treat its condition the most effectively, and not limit the type, so it can be the put into the human food chain.

b) I hope my ned, lives a very long and happy life.........by which time I'm guessing she will be tough a hell!!!

c) My horse is a pet, and not effectively 'livestock' which is what the majority of 'meat' horses are. They have been bred, reared and kept purely for this purpose. That said, I rather see a horse sent to slaughter healthy, than neglected in a field by some do-good-er, who didn't like the idea of horses being eaten, but ignored the facts entirely.

What a load of fuss over nothing. It is not the issue of eating horse meat that should concern people, it is how they are kept, transported & killled. I do not see any difference in eating an intelligent animal like a pig to eating a horse. I dont eat much red meat as it happens, mainly because I dont like the way we keep them before they end up on our plates. As for "occupy a different place in our lives" maybe, but not abroad, & you can bet your ancestors probably ate horse meat. They are not thought of as pets abroad, that does not make them wrong.

I did not see any problem with it, as long as the horses are well looked after it is no different to us having any other meat. Personally I have eaten horse meat and have to say really liked it

Personally I couldn't watch the F-Word last night. I don't think it's right to treat an animal as a pet and then eat the same animal. I am not vegetarian, but I do not eat dog, cat, horse, budgerigar or hamster. I am aware that this may be misguided, but TBH I don't care. I think my view is shared by a lot of other people in this country and that it was insensitive of the program to show this. I do however believe in freedom of speech etc, so I just chose not to watch it. Maybe Gordon will be serving up a labrador fricasee next week? I wonder what response he would get then....

i have no problem whatsoever about horse slaughter, or cattle/sheep/pigs etc

what i do have a problem with is their treatment prior to....

more localised markets/slaughterhouses must be replaced by the next govt to prevent the nonsense of long distance travel.

as for what goes on over on mainland europe is a travisty.

Lol ok when I have supposed to have done that precisely?

The correlation I made between eating horsemeat and dolphins etc was to do with the wild species and not farmed.
There are groups of people whose livelyhood relies on the consumption of whales and dolphins. All of the carcass is used by some groups of individuals.
But I am against commercial whaling as that is just based on human greed a term which seems to pop up which ever side of the globe we happen to live on.
Because we have the word 'human' assigned to us it makes us think we have to right to exploit every other living creature on this planet.
Tell me what gives us the right because I would love to know?
Can anyone rightly justify the actions of us, most of us that is?
Eating wild horses or in a time of short supply I do not have a problem with that. By that I mean groups of people who have very little choice in the form of animal protein.
I do not and will not condone the eating of horse in any other situation and I cannot believe people's attitude on here when they say they will quite happily eat horse meat ( or have) or don't have a problem with it. Especially when people that own horses themselves will moan and groan and get upset if their bloody horse gets lame or similar.
Talk about double standards.
How can you care about yout horse being lame when at the same time you don't give a [****] as to what kind of pain and suffering horses endure as a result of the horsemeat trade.
This is not aimed at you specifically ( seeing as I quoted a quote you said in your post) It is aimed at every single person on here who believes it is perfectly fine to eat horses no matter what suffering they endure ( that we don't see). How can anybody know what these animals suffer before killing and during the process.
What their level of fear of pain threshold is.
I suggest some of you take a look at some of the videos shot on this subject and then try and justify your beliefs!
Really pissed off now so I'm going!

Dont know what your issue is? Horse was very well covered and obviously well cared for. Why is it any different? If we rode cows and sheep would people be up in arms?

I am a horse lover and no I could not eat my own horse, way too close for that but we have had pigs that we didnt name and eaten them the following year.

As long as they are slaughtered humanely and if for human consumption stun gun/and/or bullet then they would be out of it instantly.

Why the big deal?

Maybe being brought up around farming helps harden people up?
