I have a yearling, who i went down, and it looked like he had blown an abscess under his chin (not strangles, too far forward, and healthy horse)
i cleaned it out, and no more puss, looked like it was healing ok. the flap of skin came off, and it looked red and healthy
I believe that it is coming through proud, as it is bulging out now, 2 days later, and the original split is again visible.
Anything that i can put on it to help it settle down again?
thanks x

Havent had any experiance with a wound like that, but I have heard wonderful things about medical grade manuka honey... of in doubt though I would call your vet and see if they can suggest something!

you needed to keep bathing it with warm water for at least 4-5 days to make sure there was no pus still inside and also to not let it scab over so quickly because if there was more pus inside it will just come up again which it sounds like it has done. start bathing it with warm water again and do not apply any ointment to help it heal for 4-5 days to ensure there is no more pus then start to apply fuciderm cream which will also help with the proud flesh. these sometimes will continue to come and go for at least a year in the same place so keep checking the area even when this one is healed.
