Hello everyone. Wondered if anyone might know why the hair on my horse's face has gone all patchy and fine. His body hair is unaffected but on his face it is all a bit mangy - and it does not appear to be from anything rubbing as a lot of it is in places that neither the headcollar/bridle nor horse could rub. Any ideas? Starting to look a bit manky now and noone wants that for their handsome horse!

Hi

Have you got any pictures?

Not on me as at work but can try and take some tonight and put them up... although not sure that you would see it that clearly. It is like thining in places and patches of no hair at all especially underneath his jaw line... most bizarre!

Could he be rubbing it on something in the field or stable?

Mine get very itchy this time of year with the flies and humidity. Does his coat appear dusty? If so, I would groom him as much as possible and try to give him regular baths (weather permiting)!

Is the skin broken and / or scabby at all?

mine has been rubbing his face which he never normally does, you may find its this crazy weather which is screwing up their coats nicely.

I will check his legs that's a good idea! I give him a thorough groom every day but maybe need to get some medicated shampoo and give his face the once over! Hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow so I can do it before the rain comes again!! Thanks for all your help!

Hate to say it, but it sounds a bit like mange mites. Don't use his headcollar etc on any other horse....just in case.
You can get shampoo to cure it if it is mange mites.
