Hi, this is the first time I have posted but I am really in need of some advice. On Thursday, my mare was kicked or bitten in the field. The bite/kick is on her face and has come up in a huge hard lump. The injury has been cleaned and shows no signs weeping but the lump seems to have remained. It is on just one side, midway between her eye and nose.
There are a couple of things that I would like some help with:

1) Should I be worried that the lump is not shifting, is there anything I should be doing to treat it or do you have any idea how long it will take to clear?

2) Can I ride her in this state is I remove the noseband? She shows no signs of pain and is as friendly as ever.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I think this is one for a vet to answer, if it was a kick there could be a fracture which may cause problems and possible infection. Otherwise hot and cold compresses may help reduce any swelling.

Mine injured himself in the field. X-ray showed unusual circular 'punch hole' fracture in cheekbone below eye. No damage to skin(or any blood) at the site-not so much as a hair out of place. X-ray also showed big blood clot in sinus, which vet would've drained had it not been right under the fracture. Antibiotics essential to prevent sinus infection. Bute also given. 5wks off(no riding, just field rest) due to sensitivity of area(with or without noseband) and to let fracture heal without displacing.

Ps vet said facial fractures often splinter,as the bones, especially nasal bone, are thin and often break into shards(tho treatment is usually same with or without X-ray,ie rest,it's important to rule out any ancillary probs that may need treatment).

My TB has the same ... no idea what happened but one morning got to the farm and he had a massive lump on his nose ... no cuts, no discharge so left for two weeks to see if it'd reduce but it didnt. Vet came to xray and he confirmed that he'd just banged himself and nothing to worry about. May take quite a few months to reduce. Reduced a little bit but lump still there. No pain. He had a product called something like Exyflogyl????

Hi
From my present experience of a fractured jaw, (if i can work out how to upload photos/xrays i will add them), my mare has now had 12 weeks off work (due next xrays on thursday = fingers x'd), even though she is getting better the vet advised me still not to work her due to vibrations going up through legs/body etc so as little as possible the better, my mare has had fragments removed twice even though it didnt look too bad at 1st i would strongly recommend a vet as my mares fracture goes through the bar of her mouth and i would hate to have faced any consequences of putting a bit in with that kind of injury. Even though my vet didnt xray her at 1st i had a gut feeling something wasnt right and i wanted to know for definite as im the one who had to ride the horse in the future

Thanks everybody for your replies. The thing that complicates it all is that the mare is on loan to me from the YO so what they say goes. Thankfully they have realised that it is more than just a bruise so had a someone over to look at it. They seem to think its a chipped bone.
Apparently she is ok to ride but I am not happy with putting her through that so I think a bit of time off and pampering will do her good.
Thank you all again for your help. Your views helped me convince them it was more than just a little knock.
