Facial wounds - will this scar?

So my dear boy has decided to do some DIY facial work on himself...personally I think he just wanted to go by the name of Harry Potter at our debut show at the end of the month!

I've cleaned both wounds and slathered them in green gel to help them heal and more importantly keep the flies at bay but is there anything else I should be doing and anything I can do to limit/prevent scarring? My trainer has suggested cutting away the hair on the lower wound (it's a hole with a flap of skin) to prevent infection so I'll be doing that in the morning.

I've never had to deal with such big facial wounds so not sure if it just looks worse than it is or if I'm worrying unnecessarily about my baby.

Just keep it clean and don't worry too much. It looks like it should heal pretty quickly, though maybe not in time for the show

Thanks! Give me lameness and colic and I know what to do but a gaping facial wound literally sent me dry heaving in a bush...I'd be a rubbish vet!

Thankfully due to a mix up I've had to resubmit my entry forms so might drop handsomest gelding from our classes and just stick to stressage and perhaps a change of show name and hope the judges see the funny side. It's only a local show and was more for experience than anything else so I'm not too worried about that side of things. I just want to make sure H isn't in any pain and that the whole thing heals quickly.

I don't think they will scar! Mine has done similar and no lasting damage! I tried to upload some photos but am on iPad and it won't let me put them in this reply, they are in my profile album though if you want a look! They were bleeding before I cleaned them up. No scarring at all now!

Oh wow your horse did quite the number on himself. Glad I'm not the only one who has a pony that likes to self harm his face! Glad to hear they all cleared up nicely though. How long did it take roughly? I'm just worried about all the flies at the moment, would hate for the flappy hole to get infected.

OP, my mare had a wound like this on her jaw line, if anything, it was deeper. It couldn't be stitched, but was rinsed twice a day with very weak hibiscrub, dried then filled with manuka honey. Two weeks later, it had healed with no scarring. I swear by the stuff now, honestly not a mark on her.

It healed really quickly- he also had a big wound where the headpiece of the bridle sits which settled enough to put a bridle on in about 3 days, 2 weeks later most of the hair was back and you couldn't see much! I have no idea how he did it but he specialises in self harm!

I covered the wounds in sudocrem and used a fly mask and that seemed to work!

Mine had this done back in January, doesn't look that bad but it was really quite deep!

Four weeks later it looked like this:

I didn't put anything on it at all but as of was winter there were no flies to worry about. Now you'd never know it happened.

I think you'll have no problems with that healing with no scarring at all. My horse fractured his skull and had to be opened up in three places and there is next to no scarring only a few white hairs and fine lines if you look very closely. He also has done what your horse has done on a nail scratching his head! Took a while for the hair to grow back but As you can see he still has a pretty face I think!

I am a great fan of Sudocreme for healing and Aloe Vera Gel to prevent white hair on non white patches.

Salt water is always good for healing wounds.
