I am so glad I have never had to sit that test, I would so fail. I've been towing for a few years now and I still can't reverse!
1. I got out of the vehicle too many times. You're allowed out once, I got out twice, one of which was to insert the damn reversing pin (haven't got auto-reversing brakes) - HELLO!!!!
2. I pulled forward twice (you're only allowed once). Why only once, what differences does it actually make...
3. Because tha back of the trailer wasn't within the yellow area at the back of the bay, I was 2 inches outside of it.....
I also failed the first time, second time the examinor asked if I had sat the test before, I replied yes. He asked me if I felt confident pulling a trailer I replied yes.
So for the test he told me which direction to drive whilst he spent most the test on the phone to his son or reading his morning paper.
He was totally unfussy about my reversing etc and could see I cold drive confidently and safely.
Passed with no faults!
Better luck next time! x
martlin you have to fit extra mirrors for the examiner too.. friend didn't .. so couldn't take test when he got thereI lacked sympathy!
I think the secret with the trailer test is not to do much towing before you do the test!! I know that sounds stupid but I had never towed a trailer then took a two day course with the test on the third day. I was not competant at reversing the trailer on my test day but I was very competant at doing the reverse exercise!! I was taught exactly how to do it and how to not have to get out of the car at all. I promptly passed my test then learnt how to drive a trailer!!!! Better luck on Monday!!
I wouldn't be very happy if the edge of the box you actually were two inches over was my car/horsebox/child...lol
there is not a huge emphasis on the reverse, it requires you to turn the trailer in both directions during the manouver which ensures that you know how to manipulate the trailer with some degree of accuracy. Having had my mother drive me about previously to shows, the ability to reverse with some ease even just a v short distance on a narrow country lane would have been most useful! Hence I drive it a lot more now than her.
I am for the test and had to take it, the cost is minimal in compared to keeping a horse! I did mine using group bday/xmas presents.
Kirsty I paid for 3 training sessions (about 3 hours each) the test and the use of their vehicle (smaller box trailer) was about £400 or £450 for the whole thing. It's not cheap but then neither were my driving lessons in the first instance!
I passed my driving test in 1995. Does that really mean I could just get in and tow?!
Blimey, I'm a good driver but I think I'd need lessons first!
If you can all reverse so 'damn well' and are better at it thatn anyone you know etc. then putting the trailer in a specific spot should not be hard..
I've done it, it's easy if you can reverse. Just because you can direct the trailer does not mean you can reverse well, you have to be able to direct it to a certain spot. What if you hit an accident and have to 3 point turn etc., there are so many varied road situations you must be able to deal with them all.
you did not fulfill the required criteria-hence you failed. Stop being a sore loser and go get some quality lessons to pass next time.
Just to clear up a small point, which isn't clear from my earlier 'ranting' posts. When I say the guy couldn't be bothered with the rest of the test, his words were:
"I can tell you now that you've failed that exercise, I can give you the choice to go and do the road section of the test or not, but there's not a lot of point because you have I'm afraid already failed"
With that attitude, would you have wanted to do the rest of the test with him? Hence why I said no, it's fine!
So, it was nothing to do with me being dangerous...... I could have said yes.

I;ve got another test booked for Friday at another site, and it's during rush hour, which many people have said is a benefit (can't make my mind up)
