This is also possibly a RANT because of my stress levels:mad: Im failing home checks recently because im shocked and frankly pissed off with the the state of the rabbits im seeing sitting in tiny boxes full of *****, not given a chance to ever get out as "info freely given by owners" empty food and water bowls and no bedding, just sitting in ****!! im sick and appauled and had a right old fight with someone today, I say fight, I just explode:o, admittidly im stressed but it was the final straw "excuse the pun" and I errupted.

"if you cant damn well clean and feed a rabbit, how are you going to cope with a "very high energy dog"
Genuine question......would you not clean a rabbit b4 home check was done?

Another thing (im tipsy granted) but when i had the rescue rabbits here they cost me a fortune b4 rhomed in bedding/food treats/toys etc, they are higher maintenance than a bloody dog and very active and explorative/climbed like goats:eek: im sick of seeing them bloody rotting in hutches:(

Quite right too. We had one brought in to us this week because the owners bought it a friend last weekend but the two rabbits didn't like each other so they thought they should get rid of the older one and keep the new one on her own.
They had tried to pair them in a 3 foot single storey hutch with no run.
Poor rabbit has had to have a good claw clip and his glands cleaned. We have trimmed the caked on faeces from his back end and he is in a much larger hutch with a big run, on his own for now til the vet says we can start pairing him with a lady friend.
Pet rabbits are desperately overlooked in a lot of cases.
Good on you for failing the idiots.
 
Its so sad:( I thought my OH was going to wipe this fella out), he was so blasee about the "rabbit" the mothership is also going to rub some more salt in the wounds by calling them to oficially say "failed", I usually say " you will get a call in regard to your home check" obs saves us failing them face to face. Today I was ready for an explosion (never a pretty sight):o
I think its also beacuse when i left work in the stupid hours of night shift someone dumped a rabbit outside, bone thin and when lifted from the box about 1000 maggots felll from it leg which was hanging off:mad::mad: WTF is wrong with people, and dont these people think im going to look in the rabbit hutch, lazy getz.:mad:

It's not my week , I also exploded at someone dumping an elderly dog for pathetic reasons, im sick of irrisponsible ********s. You know it's not all fluffiness this rescue stuff its damned well stressful and life impacting and hard to get out once your in knee deep (step away from the wine cayla):o

BC, when u do my spell/grammar check, cut me some slack:p:D
 
Bloody rabbits!!! Currently have Lettuce and Flapjack back, they are in their 'holiday pad' double hutch with under run on patio for night (complete with hutch cover) and 6ft run on the lawn for the day - How do 2x small rabbits need 3x water bottle, 2x feed bottle, 4x tunnels, plus toys? Fricking things cost me a fortune and was up at crack of dawn (5am) putting them in the run and adjusting the sunshade, then had to clean their 'toilets' (they have 3) and freshen their cage after my 12hrs shift.....................Shame Oz doesn't want to eat them any more as that would be an easy solution!!:D

Hey CAYLA sure they don't want dogs to see off their rabbits? They are more high maintenance than my horse!!!:rolleyes:

LMFAO, I love the names:D aren't they "high maintenance" more than you would believe, makes me even more angry so many are sitting rotting in hutches:mad: lol, at your 5am rabbit awakening:p
 
I dont blame you Cayla, I often think pet rabbits live pathetic lives shut in their cages, no interaction once the children have lost interest and are lucky to have regular food and clean water let alone being cleaned out once a week.

When I had my 500 free range hens I always cleaned them out once a week, it was a chore but I had happy hens. Other hen farmers used to laugh at me but I didnt have flies or rats.

When my daughter was growing up she had a ferret and chinchillas and I always told her if I found she wasnt looking after them properly she would come home from school and they would be gone. They lived long happy lives and I blame modern parents for the neglect of pets nowadays because children should be supervised and pets checked.

Niece chose the names, they are hers.

Rabs are cheap to buy (those 2 were free off preloved at 16 weeks :eek:), but FARRRRRRRRRRRR more expensive to keep than the average pet and SERIOUSLY high maintenance!! Pet shops should put up warnings!!
 
I read somewhere that there are a huge number of rabbits in rescue because people buy them and don't realise how much work they need. I hate seeing them in those tiny little hutches, they must be bored stupid, never mind the fact that more often than not they are sitting in their own crap.:(
 
I used to keep pet rats - when I had the home check for my dog we cleaned them out like it was Christmas! They had all freshly laundered hammocks ... LMAO ... I even mowed the lawn, pruned the hedge - you know, good impressions. I was most disappointed when the homecheck lady didn't go upstairs to see the rats and then horror or horrors she told the rescue she was worried we were too gardenproud for a big dog! Talk about backfiring!!!! I told the rescue I would rather have a dog and a garden and thank god they took my word for it ...

I make a bloody point now of asking more questions about the rabbits and looking into their hutches;) my mam would always threaten me with "it will go" if you dont look after it, aswell as raising me self that is;)
 
I agree, hate animals locked in. Before we had the cat daughter had hamsters & mice. Age 3 I used to get the food & water out for her & still make her fill them up. And even the mice who couldn't be let loose had a homemade wire run in the garden. And despite being happy with requests of ponies & a kitten, I've never let her have a rabbit or a guinea pig. I simply don't have enough lawn for what I consider to be a decent size run. The runs & hutches at most pet shops are about the right size for hamsters imo. I also kicked off in home bargains, they had hamster cages that were tiny with a metal grill on the base.The rabbits in hutches 24/7 is something I have had disagreements with other parents on a few occasions.
When I got my dog the ladies that did the inspection said they were convinced after meeting my other dog.
 
Poor rabbits! They are such sociable and fun animals, it's such a shame. I wonder if people pick them up as 'easy' pets, giving in to children's requests without really thinking it through.

When I had my rabbits they were house rabbits and really good fun to have around. They were very easy to litter train, went on walks on a harness and got on great with the other animals.
 
totally agree, I think rabbits are probably one of the most abused animals in the country, its the same old story, the kids get bored of them and they end up stuffed in a small hutch everyday never getting to come out. :( They are expensive too, people dont realise, food, bedding, treats, toys for rabbits (any small animals actually) are exceptionally expensive. As are decent large hutches and runs. They make great pets for kids, I had a rabbits and a guinea pig as a kid, loved them dearly and waited ages to be allowed them! They are time consuming and need a lot of care though, people think they are easy, big mistake! All small animals properly cared for are very time consuming and expensive. My ferret takes up more time than you would think, what with cleaning, feeding, playtime (I didnt get them out as much when there was more than one as they played together...they have a very large run...but now hes alone he comes in the house to play) toys are stupidly expensive, food is nearly as dear as the dogs arden grange per sack, cat litter is ridiculously dear, I bought more fresh bedding last week and thats frigging ridiculously expensive too I noticed. This particuluar ferret has cost me a fair few vet bills too, and I frontline the buggers everytime I do the dogs (hilarious, they dont like it much!!! :p) These small animals certainly arent easy maintenance! This ferret and his brothers had the same hutch and large run since I got them, it was new then, it could really do with replacing now, doubt will do another winter, starting to disintegrate....well thats probably 200 quid straight off!!
 
My rabbit Ben is litter trained i.e he actually goes in a small tray full of shavings in his hutch which is cleaned out daily, has a two level hutch, is let out to roam around the log cabin which is massive and has a run for grazing. When I was 10 I bred a litter and everyone of our neighbours got a baby from us. They all lived a long happy life. My Dutch rabbit Easter died of a heart attack. He was so active and happy and was my best friend, he was house trained and would even get up the stairs to play in our bedrooms.

Your right they have no idea when it comes to rabbits x

I spend easily as much time on my rabbits as I do my horses. I have continental giants and all my houses and runs were custom built by my OH as you can't buy anything big enough.
Rabbits are definitely more abused than any other animal, but as they don't bark or whimper they suffer in silence.
 
Yup I agree! I've got a house rabbit, when I got him 4 years ago I bought all the reccomended sized cages etc he didn't grow to half the size his breed should but the cage was way too small for him so went out and got the biggest one I could get. He has a big run as well indoors but hes only out in it if the dogs shut out the room. He's the most fearless bun in the world as well!!! He has scared my cat so she won't even go near him now and Barn who should be chasing bunnies doesnt go too close to the scary little thing, he's such a cuddly little bun as well so I think they should be sold in pairs .. Rabbits are amazing!! :D
I wouldn't get another rabbit though because now I've had one I don't think that it's right for them to be so boxed in all the time :(
 
Totally agree. Rabbits kept as pets is as unnatural as any other wild animal kept in a confined space for someone's amusement. I was appalled when I first saw small wild animals kept as pets and denied a natural environment and lifestyle.
 
Years ago I rescued a rabbit from the farm where i kept my horse.The farmer had the bright idea of breeding lots of rabbits to make lots of money, of course they didnt sell!
They were kept in "hutches" not much bigger then the rabbit it was bloody criminal.He said he was just going to let them loose, but between us we managed to find homes and save them.
We had a shed in the garden which we converted to rabbit hotel:) sleeping box, ramps, shelves etc.We made him a run , but im sure he was agrophobic, he'd only settle if the cat was in there with him!If I couldn't find the cat he was usually in the shed with the rabbit sunbathing lol.If we brought him into the house, dog , cat and rabbit would be led in front of the fire.
So I hope I did my bit for the rabbits,its such a shame they get neglected.
 
I think rabbits have got to be one of the most misunderstood and casually neglected/mistreated pets in the UK. So many people seem to think that you just buy a tiny hutch from the pet shop, bung the rabbit in it and everything will be fine.

It's such a shame as they're such fun and interesting little animals when given the right environment and attention. Our house rabbit was brilliant, she used to play with Big Dog (they used to chase each other round the table) and they'd share his bed together. I'd love another but unfortunately I don't think young mad whippet + rabbit would be a good combination :(
 
Well Lettuce is in BIG trouble, he did a runner this morning while I was putting him and Flapjack in their run for the day. Caught the little toad after several circuits of the garden (normally he is very easy to catch, but apparently not at 5am when late for work)! Honestly it was like the final scene of Benny Hill with the addition of a JRT going nuts behind the patio doors! :eek:

When they are at home they are let out their cage/hop to their run for the day, then have free run of the garden in the afternoon/evening before going back to their hutch for the night, however due to Oz (JRT) and non rabbit proof garden, they are confined to barracks for a week. They have a 6ftx6ft run and a 5ft double hutch with small under run as their holiday residence (so don't think they are doing bad for a pair of small rabbits). However they are used to a 6ft double hutch and whole garden. Think I'll have to get the harnesses out tonight and let them have a stroll round the garden before I have a total mutiny!! :rolleyes:
