I’m considering buying a yearling, a native, been shown successfully, great example of her breed, owner is asking £4500.
Does this seem steep in the current market? I don’t doubt from a breeders perspective this is what a pony is worth. But since covid prices went through the roof things seemed to fall slightly again. Thoughts?

If she’s been shown successfully and is a good example of her breed then I don’t think that is too far off the mark. If she was a Shetland or other small breed then it is perhaps a tad steep. I’m presuming it is a larger native which will suit more riders when mature so I think it is reasonable. You could always go to an auction and get a poor bin end yearling for next to nothing.

eta When I last worked on a native stud the youngsters were sold for around that and people were happy to pay it. Four year olds would sell for £5,000 plus. This was twenty five years ago at least.

If it is a connemara I would say that is the going rate for others large breeds I think that is a lot for a yearling.
