Fair to ask for a permanent home?

Hi,
I’ve been asked whether I would consider selling my daughter’s first pony, pony is 15 now. The home sounds lovely, and the little girl seems very sweet and gentle, but I would hate for the pony to be passed from pillar to post now that she’s older. Is it fair to ask them whether they would be offering a permanent home, as I do understand that people’s circumstances change, and the little girl will grow too big for a 12hh pony in time.
Thanks in advance

Difficult one. You could ask but as you say circumstances change. Could you sell on the understanding you have pony back if they need to sell?

Loan or lease him to them, don't think is it fair to ask them if they will keep the pony permanently and it might not be in the ponies best interests especially if the girl out grows him after a couple of years, especially as lots of ponies need a decent amount of exercise to keep them slim and healthy.

I have seen way too many ponies on farms around here kept alone until they die because the family/grown up child "can't bear to part with them". A "forever" home is often not in a pony's best interests, especially not one of 12 hands only 15 years old.

Definitely loan if you want to secure the future of the pony, preferably with stipulations that pony is kept wherever he lives now.

i never considered that angle...good point!
Its better a pony has several great homes than a miserable ‘forever’ home!

I have just been loaned a PC eventer - 15.1h/8yrs, a few clear BE90 under his belt. He would be snapped up for a very decent price but mum doesn't want him to be passed round as he is out grown or people want to move up a level. I would prefer to buy but he is perfect for me (I'm down sizing from a WB) and can't believe how lucky I am to get him on loan. Definitely loan (although I'm far too old to out grow my loan!) - a good pony like that will be snapped up but you retain control

Definitely keep ownership of you want to secure her future. You may be able to lease the pony for fixed periods of time if she is a good pc or show pony.

You can't ask people to make a commitment when they have no control over what life might throw at them in the future.
Always loan - never sell if you want to be able to ensure the pony's future.
