Over exercise.

I constantly worry about this-how much is too much? We have three 20-40 min walks a day, two mostly off lead on grass/earth tracks and one mostly on lead which is a mix of pavement and grass. We do fewer at the weekend but slightly longer walks plus he gets more garden/outside time. We do bits of training on all walks. I get that pavement and too much jumping is not good but am I doing too much? If we have one longer one, I cut down on the rest or if we have a faster one, I then do a training only one etc. We dont have any issues with him, he crashes out about 8.30pm, goes out for one last set of ablutions at 10pm and then sleeps through to 6.30am.

We started scent work last night :) he was so good, beside himself with excitement to begin with (stems from puppy class which we canned after the third week as I decided 25 min free for alls were not helpful) but remembered all his commands-and learned a new one. Tired pup at the end and we have lots of homework (tracking class starts in November). He was the youngest there and he's such a trier :) he's also a watcher, watches everyone very intently.

And his latest friend is-a Bracco Italiano! What a lovely dog-thought she was gorgeous!

How old is he? Around 5 months?

I use the 5 mins a month rule so at 5 months a max of 25 mins on lead walking/with an off lead run per day plus lots of garden time.

If I had a smaller garden the I would probably try 15 mins twice a day. My pup has plenty of play time with the other dogs but is sensible enough to rest frequently.

yes, he's around that age and I've had the 5min/month rule in the back of my mind. He gets playtime with others maybe every other day, I wish it was more often and more of it but he's at work with me and we have to work around that and availability of other dogs.
We're not actually covering huge distances when we go walking-its mostly woodland so lots of sniffing and paddling in burns and me dawdling birdwatching. The same walks with an adult dog would all be under 15 mins but I have been giving him more off lead time?

I use the 5 minute per month rule for on lead/hard surface "forced walking". My pups get as much free running on soft ground as they wish. Training is also great for tiring young, active brains. Glad you both enjoyed the scentwork session - I saw your pup mentioned on the dog training page and didn't think there could be two GRs named Quarrie in the area :)

there'd better not be another one anywhere *scowls* ;)

Its a bit of a trek home but there you go-it was even a really nice, renovated village hall! I really liked that there were only 6 of us and liked the trainer a lot. He seems to have grown out of his car sickness which is really good.

I stick v carefully to the 5min/month rule a day. I have had 2 gsps who are energetic and I have never had need to do more and wouldn't as I would be far too concerned about joints etc. It's not distance you walk, it is the impact on the joints even from what you may consider bumbling about.

The walk and several training sessions at home to tire the brain will be all the puppy needs.

Was the trainer Gwen? She is lovely! I did some working trials training with her club and am hoping to do the Scentwork in the winter when we have less on at home. It is quite a trek for me too though, so am just starting the training myself with help from my friend who has already done the Scentwork Level 1.
