Fake Irish Draught

A bit of dramatic title but I have noticed that a lot of people on Irish Draught Facebook groups. They claim there horses are pure breed Irish Draught but they look like Irish sport horse with their build . I not trying to be mean people could easily be misled by a seller .

I have a full ID mare with me that wouldn't have the bone to be a LW hunter and is barely 16h. Beautiful mare.

The traditional types have been bred out over the years especially in the UK.

Mine is 80% ID and at riding 6 still looks more like a warmblood. He is beginning to bulk out though.

Mine is 94% Irish Draught And 6% Tb. Very bright bay with a white socks and white strip on face. She has the big build but looks nothing like a your traditional type . People wouldn’t believe me when I said she was a Irish Draught she is DNA tested .

I bred a full ID mare, she passed her breed inspection here in Ireland with flying colours, but she didn't look anything like a "typical" ID. She's was stunningly beautiful though.

I wouldn't go around accusing people of lying about their horse's breeding unless you know for sure what it is.

Wow he was very weedy in comparison to now!

There's a distressing lack of old fashioned substantial IDs around now, I see purebreds that are lighter than the IDxTBs I knew 40 years ago.

And had his straight hind legs replaced, to look at ? . Great transformation.

Never even noticed that in that photo but yes his back legs look bonkers! Fortunately it’s a bad photo, not a dodgy hind leg

I think the Irish Draught seems to come in so many shapes and sizes it's really hard to say. I've met a few over the years, and they seem to either be around 16hh and stocky or giant and a bit more lanky and lots in between, all allegedly full IDs. My own mare is an ID, and somewhere between the two... she's around 16.3, really solidly built but with long legs. She's a Class 1 mare, with (I am told) sought after breeding. I guess she'd have had to pass an inspection of some kind for that. She had 3 foals and hunted in Ireland. She has some serious wear and tear going on and I bought her as a hack, I think otherwise she'd still be having foals in Ireland and probably showing and still hunting.

My gelding was allegedly an ID cross, but I was never sure. From certain angles maybe something around the head/neck set, but based on how he moved and general shape of his body/tail set etc I'd say if he was crossed with anything there was definitely Welsh in there somewhere, I used to call him my cob of celtic origins.

One of my IDs is only 16hh and very light weight compared to my 3/4 ID x TB . He is a purebred by Star Kingdom . If you go to the RDS & watch the performance classes you will see a very athletic ID.

My new ID X is a real chunk. I have seen a photo of his sire, he is the rugby prop forward of all IDs.

Dam is unknown breeding, but he is a real chunk (although under 15.3 at rising 5). Moves rather nicely though.

They are still out there, big ones.
