I have fake ones, but I also have real ones and it’s almost impossible to tell which is which. I have dome ones and the normal type. Why not get a real one? im not sure they are a deterrent to a determined thief. Far better some good chains and locks.

Real ones are cheap enough - aren't fake ones a bit 1980s?
Thank you for you view, unfortunately I am under threat of reducing my hours at work, so as I am sure you can appreciate I have to consider getting through the next 6 months maybe longer who knows... but yes we would all like real ones.

You'd be surprised how cheap you can find them on Amazon, eBay, or the second hand market. So really give it a look, but ultimately it's your decision as to what you can afford.

I'd also make things difficult to steal. Whether it's with chains, locks, the location etc.

For the fakes, I bought a pack of 4 from Amazon for £14.99 I believe. They have the option for a flashing light but I didn’t bother as I don’t ever see cameras with flashing lights! Also it had writing on the side which indicated it was a dummy - but a sharpie fixed that! I can find a link if you want

We have problem neighbours and we installed 8 CCTV cameras (plus dash cams and a Go Pro to use when we’re away from the house). The CCTV system cost less than £300 with a special offer on Amazon. It is also great for checking whether or not the postie has been, and if my husband is really “working in the garage” or just standing staring into space ?

agree with Teddypops, anyone who is half way determined can tell the difference between real cameras and fake ones. Our neighbours got the binoculars out so they could check what sort of cameras we had.

Maybe compare the cost of the camera system against the cost of losing your trailer/quad bike/insurance excess, then decide if it’s justifiable expenditure.

I think fake ones can act as a deterrent. You just need to think carefully where you install them. Obviously real ones would be wired into the elec supply. I see some camaras just plonked on a timber loosebox wall and all you need to do is stick your head inside the loosebox to see it not wired into the elec supply. So fix them somewhere that you can't see the back side of the wall so can't see if it's connected to the elec supply. Mine is fixed to the outside of the tack room. Tack room door is locked so you can't see the back side of the wall it's fixed to. It's also fairly close to the outside light so it's feasible that it could have an elec supply (I got the ons with a flashing light)

If you wish to protect your property from theft or make it identifiable so that if it is recovered after theft then you would be better off marking items with Smart Water www.smartwater.com, micro-chipping and tack marking saddles with your post code etc. Cameras may help but most serious thieves go in masked up and with false number plates on their vehicles.

How does this work when a saddle for example is sold on? I’ve always wandered!
