Cant decide which to go for......have had bulldogs and vikings that have lasted ages so def want a fal but the chieftain is over £40 less than the bulldog.

Do chieftains come up the same in terms of size etc?

Any thoughts?.......horse is 16.2h cob

I think they come up big personally. My pony wears a 6ft Horseware and a 5'9 Fal as it was HUGE. I dont know if this helps

Sorry to put a spanner in the works BUT I have a viking which I got in the early 90's. It still looks like new & is a fantastic rug :)

My problem with the chieftan is that having had such a great rug in the viking, I had no reservations in buying a chieftan.

As regards the material, it has withstood 5 VERY playful geldings (Amigo, Mark Todd & Rambo rugs shredded within days)

Although I cannot fault the material, I am VERY disappointed with the fit!!

My lad takes a 6'3 rug & my old viking is only a 6' but is so generous that it fits him beautifully. I also have a premier equine in 6'3 which fits great.

My chieftan is sitting in my local feed store's second hand corner as it came up so small it was ridiculous!!

The old style FAL were great but in my opinion, since they have been sold to another rug company, they have gone downhill as regards sizing!!

I would definitely suggest you go up a size from your horses normal size or it will be too small & rub like mad.

Sorry I couldn't be more positive. I cannot understand how Amigo, Premier Equine & Rambo rugs all fit him 6'3 but the Cheiftan doesn't. The only conclusion I can come up with is that they have been changing the style of FAL rugs to their detriment :(

I've got a 6'3 Chieftain for one of my horses and it fits him perfectly. What a shame you can't return it to who you got it from Neddynesbitt, sounds like the wrong size label was put on the rug. (I had that with a different make of rug once - a rug marked 6'6 was actually 5'6).

Definitely gone downhill in sizing, I searched for a 7ft 3 FAL Chieftan couple of weeks ago. Found it, and it was nowhere near big enough. The mare I ride hasn't got an ounce of fat on her but is big shouldered and very deep in the barrel. It wasn't deep enought and pulled so much across the front that it didn't fit in length. Took it back and came out with a 7ft WEatherbeeta Landa Easy fit, it was three inches longer that the FAL !! and a perfect fit. and thanks to the staff at ISC for going through all the rugs and laying them out over the FAL to make sure we got a good fit! and the weatherbeeta was in the sale......bonus!

Quite agree!!

My boy has all 'old' Fal rugs in 7' or 6'9 all of which are a great fit!

However, when I wanted another medium weight turnout I tried a Chieftan and the fit was dreadful! A 7' was miles off in terms of fit and also I wasn't too impressed with the quality of the finish! And as for the neckcover!! Well that would not even do up around his neck! And yes, it was supposed to be the right size!

I think that since production of the brand has moved abroad (I think to China!) the Fal quality is not the same and certainly the Chieftan is not up to standard!

I've since managed to source a number of second-hand rugs on Ebay with which I'm delighted!!
